What Kind of Amazon Parrot is this one?

Postby Russ » Sat Aug 16, 2014 2:10 pm

At my home in Peru where I have several Amazon Parrots, a local just gave me another parrot but I think it is a young one. It's eyes are like my Mealy Parrot but it has a long tail. Would you please look at the attached picture and tell me if you think this is a young Mealy Parrot (I hope so) or a Parakeet or what? Thanks.[img]

It's hard to tell from the picture but the tail seems too long for an amazon (they have short, blunt tails, this one looks long and tapered, more like a young conure) and it looks as if the wings were clipped so we can't tell what color the primaries are. And, unless this is a poached bird (and shame on you and the poacher if it is!), the person who sold it to you would know what the parents look like.

Not shame on Russ. Someone gave it to him. He had to take it. No telling what it's fate would be if he did not.

Myrtle has a long tail and long wings. She is a blue front. She also has a blue butt.

LOL - I don't know about Myrtle, but I have two BFAs, a male and a female, and they don't have long tails. Well, I guess that length is a matter of perception and what's short to me could seem long to you but the shorter, blunt-ended tail is one of the physical characteristics of Amazon parrots - versus the conures that have a long -almost or same length as their body, tapered one). As to a poached bird's fate, best thing is to take it to a rehabilitation center where he will be released into the wild when fully grown.

Thanks folks for the input, I had been looking a pictures of both parakeets and conures. None of the conures seemed to be identical to my unidentified parrot. I am in California now, but will return to Peru next month and see if I can take some better pictures. The picture on this forum was taken by my daughter a couple weeks ago, so that is the best I have for now.

Is the idea of a mini macaw just not possible on this?

No, no chance that is a mini, the face is fully feathered.

Looks just like a white-eyed conure (aratinga leucophthalmus) to me.
