GCC and Peachfront

Postby Pajarita » Wed Aug 20, 2014 9:27 am

A couple of years ago, I took in Codee (ex-Cody), female yellow-sided GCC, and Pablo, male peachfront, they promptly bonded with each other which was a great thing because Pablo is an ex-breeder (not people friendy), has only one half of a wing and had a serious neurological problem when he first came (he could only walk in circles and would fall over all the time) so unless he got himself a friend, he would have been all alone, the poor thing! The AV could find nothing wrong with him and thought it was congenital but I knew it wasn't because he couldn't have been used as a breeder if it had, and figured it might be dietary so I started treating him with supplements and a good diet. In any case, he got better, he now walks and climbs just like any other parrot and doesn't fall anymore. Codee is the sweetest little thing, she is fully flighted but does not fly because she was clipped too young and kept clipped until she came here PLUS she has a sunken eye (Horner's syndrome most likely caused by trauma) so she no longer has a good depth perception.

After getting them switched to a good diet and Pablo got better and learned how to get back into their cage when I told him to go 'home', I gave them to my daughter's mother in law who had taken canaries from me in the past and I could tell she took good care of them. But a good canary person doesn't necessarily make a good parrot person and, when they came back to stay with me when she went on vacations the first time, I was not happy to see that Codee was ecstatic to see me (kissed me for hours and would not leave my shoulder for anything!). They had also forgotten about the gloop (did not eat it the first day here) although she had promised to make it for them and their cage was not as clean as I would like so I talked to her about it and she promised to do better (I also scrubbed their cage, put new perches, new toys and gave her a big bag of gloop to take home with her). Second time they came, the cage was cleaner but, when I took Codee out the first time, she bit me twice and then proceeded to kiss me and kiss me (so I knew she was upset with me for sending her back) and they had both gotten stress bars so, although I returned them to her, I told her that I was going to keep a close eye on them and that if I saw that things did not change drastically in their lives, they would have to come back to me. And so now they are here back with their old momma.

I remember Codee, you brought her out from the small birds room off of the kitchen, for me to see, when I was there. You had also told me about her history and I thought them that she would probably come back to stay.

Aww bless, will they be long term residents now?

I really do miss my peach fronted, I'm not sure where he originally came from as they aren't very common over here.

Yes, they won't be going anywhere now. I felt terrible about misjudging the level of care they were going to get and will not subject them to another ordeal. Codee loves me and Pablo is beginning to trust me again (unbelievably, he now jumps on the kitchen towel I was using to pick him up from the floor if I lay down on the floor, keep my hand open with the towel on it and wait a bit while I keep on telling him to go home -smart little cookie!). They are now staying with the canaries and will remain there until I get my small species birdroom where they will live cage-free (they come out from 6 to 8 am and again at 4 to 6 pm when they get their dinner). This will be the room for the small species as well as all the handicapped birds so it will have ramps, ladders and ropes from the floor up for the ones that cannot fly like Pablo (Codee can fly but hardly ever does because of her defective depth perception as well as her been clipped for years before she came here). They will be happy there.

Aww good I'm really pleased they have a forever home with you now.

PS if you can ever spare the time in between looking after your flighted and furry family I would love to see some pictures of your bird rooms (if only to make me sick with jealousy lol)

I will try to post before and after pictures once we start fitting the attic rooms into the two new birdrooms. The ones I have now were always meant to be temporary and they are not as good as the birds need (not enough windows, no panels on the walls, etc). I had a beautiful birdroom in Pa (25 x 13, double windows on three walls with perfect South, East and West exposure, tiled floors, panels on the walls, and even a water fountain in the middle of it) but my poor birds have been making do with less than satisfactory for the past couple of years so the very first 'remodeling' once we close on the house will be their new rooms.

Petco is a big chain of petstores but their employees are not knowledgeable in birds (or anything else, usually) and they go by what the shipping papers says - they buy from bird mills where the birds are very cheap and have them shipped to them in boxes. They are so ignorant, they even argued with me that a canary sitting on a nest with eggs was a male!!!!
