Help with frightened Quaker parrot

Postby DoltishPar » Sun Nov 02, 2014 4:15 am

My Quaker parrot is now absolutely terrified of blankets and Im wondering why. Ever since about a week or two ago, she's been spazzing out whenever I pull up a blanket. She starts running around like crazy and makes her "attack noise" and the only way to get her to stop is when the blanket gets taken away. I always used to snuggle up with her under a blanket, but now when I try doing it she bites me and runs away or spazzes. Also, it's not just one blanket she get afraid of,but all of the blankets I own. Does anyone have an explanation that explains why she suddenly started doing this? Any feedback is appreciated!! :D

It is very difficult to answer this type of question without more information than you presented and can be difficult even with more information as parrots look at thing differently than we do, making them appear to us as a bit quirky.
Do you cover her cage at night with a blanket and if so is it possible that she got her toenails caught in it? There is always a reason for what they do even when it makes no sense to us, but this would seem to me to be the most likely cause for this.

Also, could somebody have scared her by flapping some type of material at her?

Try folded blankets to see if it is the blanket or a fear of being covered byone.

I do cover her with a sheet at night so it's a possibility that it is the cause of her being frightened, but she never freaks out when I cover her at night. Also I tried the folded blanket and she didn't react to it, so maybe it's just being covered with a blanket? I have no clue why she started doing this. The same people have been covering her and no one else approaches her so I don't think anyone would've flapped material at her (she's in her own room). She just starts freaking out under a blanket but when she's out of it she's fine.

In this case, just don't cover her with the blanket. I wonder... How old is your bird?

She should be fast asleep when you cover her cage so that's something you can improve on (my cardinals also freak out when I cover them - they are getting better though and I only started doing it about 10 days ago).

Is it possible that, because she is awake when you cover her and she is in room all by herself that she has made a connection between it and been alone and scared and that's why she is reacting to it?

My bird is about 4, I've owned her for 2 years. She's usually awake when I cover her even though I cover her when I go to sleep so she probably goes to bed before I cover her, maybe I just wake her up? Also she just started doing this a bit ago and I've been covering her the same way and time for a while.

Is she exposed to light at all before you cover her? Like maybe a TV or light from the street through a window or from another room? Does she have a good quality full spectrum light source in the room where she is kept during the day? Because you say you cover her when you go to bed so unless you are going to bed at 7pm this time of the year, she should be fast asleep. I don't know if you are aware of this but quakers are not tropical or even subtropical parrots, they come from the temperate zone in South America and NEED to be kept to a super strict solar schedule with full exposure to dawn and dusk so, if you are not doing this with her, maybe the problem is a heightened anxiety from a malfunctioning endocrine system (been overly hormonal is physically painful to them and makes for mood swings as well as aberrant behaviors and, if she doesn't have a good quality full spectrum light, she might not be producing sufficient levels of serotonin and dopamine -happy and reward hormones).

No , she doesn't have exposure to light and does expirences dusk and dawn because she is in front of a huge viewing window (we move her back quite a bit when it gets colder out). There are no street lamps and hardly any cars come down my road after 6pm, I do close the blinds for her and open them back up around 6am. She's in a room by herself, and no one goes past her area at night (unless using the restroom). I also cover her at 9pm and she's usually at the bottom of her cage sleeping.
