What Kind Of Amazon Parrot Is this?

Postby JaydeParrot » Wed Jan 07, 2015 11:11 am

Some friends of mine used to have an amazon parrot, it died of old age (50) a few years ago, they've recently decided that they want another, they've found someone who's selling an amazon parrot but doesn't know the species of amazon it is.

I've looked at it, I think it's either a mealy or a yellow naped, maybe a yellow crowned, it's three years old and believed to be male if that's any help.

Anyone have any ideas on what kind of Amazon parrot this is?

I can't say for sure although it looks a lot like Mimi who is a 15 yr. old Yellow-naped Amazon female. Judging from the eye color as best as I can tell it is still a juvenile bird so three yr. old is a good estimate, I think.

Yes, it looks like a Yellow Nape to me (most of them are all green until they get older and start getting the yellow spot on the neck which grows as the years go by but there are some who never get any yellow). They do have brown eyes when juveniles but this could be an old picture because, at three years of age, the eyes would have, at the very least, started changing and, although it's hard to tell from the picture, this bird's eyes look completely brown.

I have no idea how big that parrot is, but a guy I know have two Mealy amazons and they look pretty much exactly like the one in your photo... If the bird in the photo isn't huge for an amazon, though, it's probably not a Mealy ;) They are big!

It could be a green headed mealy but they usually have some yellow feathers on their heads, the 'other' mealies all have the 'flour dusting' on their heads and backs, something that this one does not appear to have - but then, it could be the light, the picture, who knows...
