My wife and I have started house shopping lately, and aim to have a new house by October this year. There could be delays, but we're hoping to be able to save up for a pretty good down payment so we can afford something nicer. That being said, we've already started teasing about our new birdies.
The plan is to get a house, and then make a room into a BIRD room. Complete with the works. If it's above ground, a few windows, sound proof door, concrete floor with a drain and a house for quick cleaning. Large cage for each of the brids with a central play area made up of training trees and hanging ropes. We're going all out (not having kids is the best).
Now, my wife has made it perfectly clear. She loves her eclectus, but you can never have just ONE bird. As a stay-at-home kind, I'm good getting her whatever he wants. For her, that's a blue and gold macaw. That means, when we have the setup, we will have a timneh, a red eclectus, and a blue and gold macaw. However, I've yet to figure out which breed I want.
Loki satisfies my needs for a big bird to a pretty good extent. Obviously Greys fit into the m/l category, but I'm not sure I need a birdy bigger than Loki for bird number 2. He's got all I want in a big bird.
I want to go hypothetical here. Obviously, in a year's time I'll be more experienced, and heck, I probably won't get my next bird until her Macaw is halfway through puberty. However, I'm having a hard time solidifying what I want to aim towards for my next bird.
My list sits as it goes:
Black Capped Caique (admittedly my preferred choice)
Goffin's Cockatoo
Black Lory
Military Macaw (I know I said nothing bigger than a grey, but I'd CONSIDER IT).
Ring-neck
Vasa Parrot
What I ultimately want in a bird is a cuddle bug. I don't care if they talk, and I don't care if they're super trick happy. I want my second bird to contrast Loki's mellow personality. I want a cuddly ball of energy and love. Something that COULD sit on my shoulder and enjoy neck scratchies for days, but also loves to play peek-a-boo and other games. But, unlike the umbrella cockatoo, can go a day if my wife and I go on a 2 day trip every year for my job's Christmas party in the slopes.
I'm not naïve enough to think that just because a bird is a specific breed it will exhibit the qualities I want in a bird, but let's be general. Those of you who have owned these breeds, what would you recommend?
