Sun Conure Or Senegal Parrot?

Postby Walker » Mon Jan 26, 2015 10:11 pm

So, today i saw a baby Senegal parrot and it looked really cool, but the thing is i don't know what bird to pick. I either want a conure or a Senegal parrot. I know that conures can be very loud at times but with patience u can train them to not make as much noise. The thing is with the Senegal parrot is that i heard and read that when they are sexually mature they tend to pick a preferred person. I've seen in some cases that a Senegal parrot loved his owner and as soon as he turned sexually mature he went for his wife so that really concerns me. The thing is i have 4 people in my house and i want it to at least tolerate other people in my family, and i heard that usually Senegals tend to bond with one owner so i really don't know. Can someone give me a reason to pick a senegal over a sun conure or any type of conure? My breeder only has Senegals at the moment due to the season.

Thank you :)

First could you elaborate about the four people in the household? Are you saying that you have children and if so what are their ages?
Yes Senegals have a strong tendency to become one person birds, but you will find this trait in the conures as well. In fact it is a pretty common trait in most species of parrots. What is your background with birds? How many years are you willing to devote to the bird? 7 years? 15 years? 25 Years? 50 years?

Yes, Wolf's questions are essential to any recommendation of a particular species but allow me to clarify a couple of points.

Senegals and Sunnies are VASTLY different from each other but they are both birds that will bond more with one person. Whether the bird turns aggressive toward others is more a question of how the bird is kept than of species.

It's simply not true that you can train a parrot out of its normal vocalization. Sun conures screams are loud, shrill and more frequent than other species. Senegals are considered one of the 'quiet' species but they can scream loud and often, too (I had one that was given up because the owner was afraid of getting evicted because of her constant screaming).

Both aggression toward others and screams are a matter of how the birds are kept. Parrots get aggressive and/or scream all the time and/or show what people call 'inadequate behavior' when they are overly hormonal and/or left alone or caged for long periods of time. I have both senegals and conures and they are not aggressive toward other people nor do they scream all the time but this was not achieved through training but through good husbandry.
