Blue Fronted Amazon

Postby kirdo » Sat Feb 21, 2015 4:33 am

Hello All!

I am currently looking into purchasing a hand raised Blue Fronted Amazon and I was just after a little more information from people who have experienced them first hand. I have previously had experience with Budgies, Cockatiels and a Princess Parrot.

Firstly, is male or female better? A lot of the websites I have visited say that males become quite aggressive when it comes to mating season, is this still the case if there were no females around?

I live in Canberra, Australia and was wondering if (and what) kind of licence is required to own a BFA?

I live with my partner, a Blue Tongue Lizard and a Rhodesian Ridgeback. Do BFAs get along with other animals well? Our pup got along really well with our Princess Parrot and they would often play and eat together.

Finally, does anyone know of any reputable breeders around Canberra (or are willing to freight their birds)?

Thanks in advance for your help :D

I don't live is Australia and can't answer your questions at the moment, but I will look into finding the answers you need. Also we do have several members living in Australia and, hopefully some of them will respond with the answers before I come up with them. While you are waiting for this all to happen I thought that I would ask about your Princess Parrot and inquire as to where it is currently at. I am curious about it.

Unfortunately Wolf he managed to escape as we were moving into our new place. Being in an unknown area and all the strangers (removalists) he got scared and flew further away. It was a really sad day, he was my partner's bird and he was at work at the time.

I am sorry for the loss of this bird, but was this recently or not?

Sorry about losing your princess, thankfully, this happened in Australia so there is a strong possibility he/she made it to a local flock.

BFA males are aggressive when hormonal even when there is no hen - actually, they might even be more aggressive without than with a 'wife' if the bird is overly hormonal (no release). BFAs are one of the 'hot three' species but it seems to me that the hens are much sweeter - I've only have a male and a female and you need a good number of individuals to be able to judge accurately.

Polarn is a blue front and his dad didn't say anything about him being aggressive.
We haven't heard from him for a while.

Actually, Liz, I don't remember Polarn's father saying anything about his own birds, do you? Was it a male or a female he had and do you remember how old it was?

Polarn was the birds name. He is male. I don't remember the age but it seemed to me that he was a couple of years older than Myrtle. He only told the good things. I don't remember him complaining about the bird causing trouble.

I actually don't remember a single posting that said anything about his own birds, he mostly answered other people's questions but never said much about his birds... even if Polarn's gender was assumed or DNA'd or his age.

His Blue Fronted Amazon was born in June of 2011 and he picked him up from the breeder on the 11th of Dec 2011, Didn't say weather DNA'd or not. He also had some brown headed parrots.
