Should I get a Budgie to be friends with my Parrotlet?

Postby hannah233 » Thu Apr 16, 2015 5:25 pm

Hi everyone! I am new here so please forgive any mistakes, I think I have this website figured out but not positive (:

I have a 7 month old male Parrotlet and I'm considering getting a Budgie. I've always loved Budgies, I just think their tiny beaks are so adorable and they are so pretty! The thing is, my Parrotlet, Petri, is very bonded with me and also his territory is basically my entire room and the computer/lounge room connected to it. He has the typical Parrotlet attitude, very bold and can be incredibly sassy. Sometimes when he does something naughty and I scold him he actually talks back and purposely interrupts me and tries to talk louder than i'm talking! Even though he can be a bit of a brat at times, I love him nonetheless and he is almost always in a good mood so he's very cuddly and loves chin and head rubs as well as beak kisses. He is sometimes territorial of my bed I've noticed and will run after and bite anyone who touches it until they stop touching it. He's not really territorial of his cage, surprisingly. He has not seen any other birds since I got him when he was 8 weeks old, but if I'm not in the room with him I can almost always hear him talking to himself. Usually if I am in the room and then leave, he will start chirping very very loudly until I say something from the other room or until I come back. I follow a lot of Parrotlet accounts on Instagram and whenever I play one of their videos, if they're making any noise, Petri goes nuts and starts chirping back to them and looking around trying to find them.
Do you think he is lonely and missing other bird interaction?

I've seen a lot of photos and stories of Parrotlets being friends with Budgies or other small parrots. Does anyone have any experience with this? Petri is not mean at all and never intentionally bites unless he is "provoked". I say intentionally because sometimes he picks at my cuticles a bit too hard, and "provoked" because he absolutely abhors tissues when I clean up his poop. That being said, I still don't know how he'd react to other birds as opposed to humans since he hasn't been around them since he was a tiny baby.

Also if anyone has a better suggestion for the breed of bird instead of a Budgie, that'd be awesome as well!

Here is a video of Petri btw c:

For me this is a very good question for which I have the bird of both species but have never tried them together, but then I really haven't had the budgies long enough to say. I have a mated pair of budgies and a 12 year old female parrotlet.
I have primarily heard the flip side of your information. By that I mean parrotlets that would not accept another bird including those of their own species and of opposite gender. I was told that this parrotlet was female and am waiting for the results of a DNA sexing any day now.
I don't have an answer as of this time, I have however, been holding the parrotlet down next to the budgies and so far am getting no reaction fro the parrotlet. Now the budgies aren't ready to trust me yet as I have not had them very long, so they go to the far side of the cage right now.
