Macaws

Postby B&K Herpetology » Mon Jun 22, 2015 9:33 am

Hi all, ive got a wonderful young Grey and ive always wanted a Blue and Gold Macaw, whilst this will most likely always be a dream i just wondered did anybody jump straight in at the deep end with a Macaw or Cut there teeth so to speak on a smaller/different species?

Im constantly on forums, and buying, borrowing books from my library and reading up on these magnificent creatures and im learning so much through the experience with my girl.

Would be great to hear of some of your experiences.

Many thanks!

The first big bird I ever touched or I should say touched me was a Macaw. All I knew was his name was Pepper. I think that was all he could say but I heard it a lot from across the street. One day the man was hosing his cage down and the bird was screaming. Being the person I am I went across the street. If the bird was in the cage I was going to put a stop to it.
What I found was the Macaw loose on the front porch and screaming while trying to get the front door open. I sat on the step to console him and he came running and jumped on my arm. First it surprised me how heavy he was. Then to think he would go to a stranger for help. He was okay but was afraid he would get wet.
Like Pepper, I think it would have to be a Macaw that wanted to bond to a human that could be cared for by a beginner.

Since you already have such a wonderful Grey in your care, I would advise against a Macaw simply for the fact that a Grey is a dust bird and Macaws are overly sensitive to this dust, which can cause them severe respiratory distress.
