Mynah Birds

Postby AnimalAffinity » Wed Jun 24, 2015 12:56 am

I have been looking into getting a mynah and found some babies from a breeder near me, I have read up on them but all care sheets I find seem very limited. Can anyone help me out I'd like to know more about their diet, housing, behavior, etc. Thanks

What kind of mynah? Mynah is a generic name for starling species from Asia so it actually covers several different species.

Interesting birds, they're said to not bond as easily to their owner as a parrot, they generally mimic better than an african grey and have a lifespan of 10 to 15 years old, that's all I know really I think they're fruit eaters. I remember a video saying they used to be as common as budgies, lost popularity and are now fairly rare in captivity, congratulations on finding some for sale!

Mynahs also aren't parrots, not too sure which family they're in really...

Correct, Jayde, they are not psittacines, they are passerines (order) of the sternidae family which has not subfamilies as all the birds under it are starlings species.

The Common Hill Mynas are very intelligent and learn to talk very well but they are not easy pets to keep as they require a HUGE aviary (they are not parrots so they don't climb and hardly walk, they fly and hop -thus the requirement of the extra large housing), their calls are very loud and shrill and they are very difficult to feed correctly because they are VERY prone to hemochromatosis.
