Will lovebirds return to their aviary if set free?

Postby Shenron » Mon Jul 06, 2015 2:42 pm

Hi, I'm very new to this forum, and I'd just like to say in advance that I'm sorry if I'm doing anything wrong :)
Yesterday 3 of our lovebirds (Agapornis, not sure about the subspecies but can find out if necessary) escaped from their aviary, and seeing them fly around the grounds got me thinking if it would be possible to have a permanent exit/entrance to their aviary, and then having the birds stick around and perhaps nesting in their aviary. I live in a pretty isolated former farm house, and there are trees everywhere in and around our yard/backyard, which is pretty big, continued by a small forest which ends up in a lake. All of this is completely isolated by farming fields. There is a zoo in Denmark called Ree Park which I know keeps monk parakeets like I'm describing, the parakeets having an aviary as kind of a base to which they all keep returning to and nesting in. I've already noticed that our birds are returning to their aviary, and we've managed to get one back in there, but what I'm really looking for is someone with personal experience, or basically just anyone who knows someone who does it.
I would really appreciate some feedback, and again, sorry for any assumptions that I may have made out of ignorance and other things like that :P
Thanks.

No they won't return. They will fly until they cannot fly anymore. If a hawk does not get them they will try to find other birds o be with or another human to feed them.

They may return a few times, but don't count on it lasting. They will quit coming back or they will be caught and killed by local predators which they don't know about and therefore don't fear. Catch them of you are signing their death warrant.

Not even large companion parrots (which are much more deeply imprinted to their humans than any of the little aviary species) professionally trained for flight recall come back all the time so, please, don't consider doing this because, as Wolf said, you will be signing their death warrant if you do.

Monks live in communal nests all year round and the flocks are individuals related matrilineally so, yes, most of them would come back but some of the young males will not (they would leave to look for mates).

But these are not Monks these are Lovebirds and they won't return very often, if you don't bring them in they will go away.

Correct. I mentioned the monks because he had said he knew of a colony of monks that lived free in this zoo in Denmark - but I doubt they do as well as people think they do.

Hi, thanks for all the replies.
As far as the monks being kept this way in that zoo goes, I'm 100% sure, as I've seen it and I talked to a zookeeper about it.
I would really love to see some replies from people who are doing this with other bird species, though I realize that it not a very widely used thing.. :)

I also base my idea on the fact that lovebirds are very social birds, which means that where ever the flock is, is the point to which they will always return - the fact that lovebirds mate for life could also support this..
