taming Timneh African Grey (TAG)

Postby Shadymazen123 » Sun Oct 11, 2015 3:17 am

Hello i am shady mazen i have timneh african grey parrot, he is 5 months old. I own him since 2 weeks, he is cute but he is really scared, when i get closer to his cage he starts screaming, and growling. I handle with Zazu using hard gloves, when i put my hands in his cage he bites the gloves fiercely but ironically he steps on the gloves.
I tried when he screams i put my hand over his head and this made him stop screaming but for a while is this a good or bad method, i give him the rubs by putting on a glove and setting his head on a pillow and i give him the rubs, he likes it though. But when he remembers that i am human he starts screaming again xD. Sadly my parents gave me 3 weeks to tame Zazu. because my dad wants to give it away because he bit me and i got 1 stitch. Tbh i didn’t get mad with Zazu or be scared from him, i liked him more. He is intelligent boy.
I adore him and i cant leave my parents take him away from me.
P.s I put his cage in my room in front of my bed, he sees me everyday and i say good morning and goodnight when i see him

More information about Zazu's daily schedule and diet would be very helpful in helping you with him as the biting could easily be due to his being a bit hormonal at this time of the year, although that should begin to decline as the bird goes back out of breeding condition if he is on the correct light schedule and if he has the proper diet. Tell us what it is like being Zazu for a day, what does he do all day long, does he have toys and what kind of toys does he have as well as does he use them. What about out of cage time and time spent daily with you, I am sure that there is room for improvement in this area as you are using gloves. Get rid of the gloves and spend the time studying your bird trying to understand what he is trying to tell you as I can assure you that he is trying to talk to you.
Don't reach into his cage, open the door and step back and allow him to come out on his own then clean his cage and change his food and water while he is out looking around. This by itself will probably reduce the frequency as well as the severity of his bites. It is important for both you and your parents to understand that parrots bite, all parrots. The primary reasons that a parrot may bite are the invasion of their nesting area ( cage ) by the human, self defense and fear, and the human not listening to the parrot. As a general rule parrots are gentle creature and not overly prone to biting and Greys are even more gentle as they prefer to push your hand away or to grab your finger and move your hand away without hurting you, they can be very gentle and respectful of you and you need to learn to be the same with them.
Waiting to hear more from you so that we can be more specific with our suggestions to help you with Zazu.
