I found a list of foods that are low on iron, but it consisted of meat. Then the things I saw that had no iron in it were oils/fats and candy. I'm looking for other sources. Hopefully there will be things the bird can actually eat, that has very little iron.

EDIT: I found some use in this. There aren't many foods that birds can eat, listed here, but it at least tells you what to avoid. http://food-drink.blurtit.com/275999/i- ... n-you-help

I suspect that with all the hype on TV about cheerios being healthy because they are made with oats, that the owner never looked beyond the hype. I wonder if a reduction in vitamin C would be helpful with this birds as Vitamin C acts to increase the absorption of iron.

Cheerios were the first solid food my baby grey got. Come to think of it, I think Cheerios were the first solid food my kids got.

Yes, I thought of that one, too, and will add it to the special vitamin/mineral supplement requirement because, basically, what one wants is to reduce all future iron intake. Unfortunately, ABBA is closed until next week so I don't know if they can do it for me.

As to Cheerios been fed to parrots, this has been happening for years now. People just see something in a birdsite and take it as the gospel without doing any real research on it... but the 'if it's good for me, must be good for the parrot' is part of it, Wolf. And, of course, the ubiquitous "My bird has been eating them for years and it's just fine" doesn't help, either!

I doubt Cheerios are actually good for people, either. Something about it seems... Off. I would have to do some research on that.

I had recently done a breakdown on nutritional values for a list of grains for Liz and although some of them were high in iron, I believe some of them were low in iron. Also many of them were great for lowering cholesterol. This is the link to the topic: viewtopic.php?f=11&t=13460

I don't know if it will be of help but I do hope so.

Thanks! I really, really appreciate all the concern and research you guys have done on Sunny's and my behalf! The wait for the vet to come back is a bit nerve-wrecking but I keep on telling myself that this is not going to be a fast and easy thing so waiting a few more days is not really going to make a significant difference.

It doesnt matter how much experience we have, we worry about each one so much. The Senegal my duaghter rescued had been fed human food, while her owner ate and bird seed. Her feathers were not shiny, and she had all her flight feathers but was too weak to fly far. She used most of her energy neurotically dancing on her two hard perches. The cheerios, chicken, butter, sauces, white bread etc. she injested showed on her. She has more energy now and her feathers shine and she has bonded to my daughter and is a much happier bird. She loves to sit on my daughter and watch her crochet. The diet she was on may have shortened her life but she has a lot of life yet. I am sure your love will do wonders for Sunny the Sun Conure. Life will get better being with you thats for sure.
