What breed?

Postby Sarahhof » Mon Dec 28, 2015 1:34 pm

I'm in high school and have loved birds since kindergarten. After many years of hatching and easing chicken and quail, and having to give them to other hatcheries because it's against the law to keep them, I decided in forth grade I really wanted a bird I could keep. Since then I've been researching parrots. My parents finally told me I could have one and I was so excited I pulled another all nighter of research (lol ;P), and have been looking at a bunch of different websites and blogs about different species. Now, I am unsure of what breed to get now that I finally can get one.

I was wondering if someone could suggest a breed to me?

The qualities I was looking for:

Small to medium sized (Though I would prefer larger. If be too afraid of accidentally hurting or stressing a small bird when I take it to relatives houses/on vacation with me :) )

Quiet- not prone to screaming (I know all birds could scream, and screaming sdoesnt really bother me, but I want my parent to have a positive experience)

My parents were scared of the huge beaks when we went and looked at birds, so I'd rather it be gently and calm. This isn't that important, though, cause I'll be out of the house soon. It's really important that my parents like the bird cause I want to leave it at home while I'm at college.)

Space and money isn't an issue, We have enough.

The ability to talk and coloration also doesn't matter.

The bird has to be able to bond to more than one person, and has to be cuddly :3

It was to be able to withstand the cold and heat.

Could it have a lifespan of 20-30 + years if possible? This doesn't matter as much as the personality.

I know this may be too much to ask, but it would be great if the bird was independent to entertain itself with a bunch of toys for a few hours, my family is really busy. It'll be out as long as we are at home, though?

Thanks! I'm really excited about this!!

Ay, my dear, there is no such parrot! Parrots are, by nature, not independent and they tend to bond to one person only. They are all noisy and they can all bite and not all species are cuddly... Let me think about it and I'll see if I can come up with something that would work out for you.

Pois are the ones that come to mind with what you are wanting. They have a much quieter contact call than most parrots, and they are a medium sized parrot. They all have the potential to bond to only one person, but Meyers and Brownheads especially the males are known to often bond with more than one person. My daughters Meyers likes everyone, and will go on any new person. My Meyers is more reserved but likes more than one person too and will step up for almost anyone if they talk sweetly to him first. All Pois are very independant and will spend time playing alone. Moine wil come to me when they want my attention and the rest of the time they are off doing there own thing.

Yes, pois come to mind because they are more quiet than most but they can also scream non-stop if the care is not good (I had a female Senegal given to me because the owner was afraid that she was going to get evicted because of complaints). They can't stand cold or heat, they live longer than 30 years, and they do change when they become sexually mature (yours and your daughter's are babies still). They can also be super aggressive when hormonal...

I really have not been able to come up with a species that fits, my dear...

Senegals are the loudest of the small Pois, no doubt about that. but many people have Senegals in an apartment and that is one of the reasons I have Pois now, I will be able to keep them in many places I live. GGC are the quietest of the conures but they are a small parrot and you were looking for a medium size. All parrots are loud, its just that for a medium parrot pois are the best choice for an apartment.

I have not owned a pois, but i was oing to say GCC though they are still loud. They are cuddly, to more than one person(if shown to be) and matches most of your wishes. They are however definately not independamt and do require lots of love and time (all birds do) if it is to be happy and healthy.

GGC can be loud and my daughters copies the sound of the magpies.I live in one side of a duplex and my daughter lives on the other side. I never hear her Senegal or GGC through the wall even though I can hear her TV at times and she can't hear my parrots either. My Red Belly is not loud, she is constantly talking and My Meyers contact call is not very loud r. All parrots are loud, though.
