Green cheek Conure or Cockatiël

Postby leetje » Sat Jan 23, 2016 7:43 pm

Hi! :D
:gcc: :greycockatiel:
After doing a lot of research I am currently deciding between a green cheek conure or a cockatiël.

I'm going to live in a small apartment so noise might be a problem (not to me, but the neighbours might not like it ;) ) My personal preference goes out for the conure but I want to know what species is best for my situation.

Thanks alot in advance!!! :D
(and sorry if my english is bad)

I have never had a cockateil, but gccs are one of the 'quieter' species of conure, this dosnt mean that they wont have screaming fits though
They are still quite loud though, and I do think that teils are quieter,(I have not heard one scream)!
Sorry if I am not helping much! I wish you the best with your decision!

Well, they can both be 'noisy' but only when they are not happy (if they are alone for hours). The difference between the two is that cockatiels calls are not as loud as the GCCs and their bites are not as hard (which they will both do if unhappy) so the question is how many hours during the day will you be able to let them out of their cage to fly around and how many hours during the day (you can't do it at night) will you be able to spend with them?

I have had the opposite experience and found cockatiels to have a louder maximum volume. I also prefer the sound of the all-out conure scream to that of the cockatiels I have known. Also the general chattiness of cockatiels is hard for me - I could never have a budgie. Noisiness = frequency, loudness = volume, here.

Can you visit some? Volunteer with them, learn body language and perhaps get bitten or make a friend? Even if there aren't any rescues, sometimes people with larger flocks welcome cleaning and socialisation time from volunteers. Adult birds are much better than babies, who go through puberty! Conure puberty generally means nippiness^10. That is a lot of nippiness.

GCC: have a hard limit mimum daily time physically on you. Any less, and they will start biting. The solution is to suck it up and give them double the attention until they forgive you, and then never give them that little skin time again. Nipping can be a form of communication. If you are the type to flinch ir have lingering pain if you accidentally knock your knuckles against a door frame, I would not recommend this very beaky species. I have a gcc, and adore him, but finishing my thesis has started a biting attention plea which my family is suffering. Time to cuddle tomorrow! Oil birds, not dusty.

Cockatiel: not as likely to want to be on you for hours on end (can be good, individuals will vary, and babies change) but much more likely to be vocally expressive with a wider range of sounds. Can be musically-inclined and whistle-riffing duets are tons of fun! Dust - anyone with asthma? Seasonal respiratory allergies? Do you like to dust and are you willing to buy an air filter? Dust is bad for birds and people, and can be a serious issue if you live with someone with respiratory issues.

Both can be astonishingly messy (food four meters away, stuck to a wall. How? Mystery poops appearing. Cockatiel dust.) Both can make you bleed. Both should fly for exercise. Both are very smart, if not always in the way you might expect.

Thank you all so much! :D

I don't have any seasonal allergies, but I do have a dust mite allergy.
I'm going to live on my own.
I am a quiet person and prefer the company of animals over humans, wich means I'll prefer being home with my bird :)

I do want my bird to fly, I'm going to make my room safe for the bird.
The time I have for the bird:
I am going to study so that takes time. :)
but when I'm home the bird is allowed to fly around as much as he or she wants.

Two birds don't make as much noise as one, except for budgies who have a constant chatter. I enjoy their chatter. Other than if they get scared the most noise my cockatiels make is in the morning when they hear me moving they start screaming for attention and breakfast. The rest of the time it is boys singing and the girls chirping.

Not all birds bite just because they are unhappy some birds dont bite at all.

My Cockatiels can be a little loud in the morning and when they are excited but its not too loud. Some Cockatiels can also be very cuddly and enjoy scratches.

As you can see, so much, just concerning the noise levels of a parrot, is subjective and almost entirely dependent upon the tolerance of the individual human as well as their personal preferences. Even were we to record and publish the decibel levels to get around this is saying that one species is generally louder than another there is much more to it than just that as there is also the frequency of the noises, and then speaking of frequency there is the frequency as in the pitch of the noises and we respond to these variations in pitch just as much as to the actual volume of the noises with some pitches being less of an issue than others to different people.

These individual preferences to noise and to personalities is one of the things that make finding the right parrot species to choose from more difficult and is one of my reasons for suggesting that where it is possible you should get involved with a parrot rescue where you can get first hand experience with a wider variety of birds before making any choice about which bird to get. Otherwise the actual day to day descriptions of how it is to live with one of these birds can become quite confusing to say the least.
