Bluefronts

These are all, supposedly, bluefronted amazons. I can find pictures of them with no yellow on the wings, some with almost half the wing yellow, some with red on the wings, some with none. Different foot colors, too. And some have as much yellow on the heads as a double yellow head, some have none. Are they really this variable, are they different sub species, or are there some hybrids in there?

Simply based on the written descriptions from various parrot sites as well as the pictures tha accompany most of these and then with they manner in which humans tend to breed birds when there are no restrictions placed on them, as in the USA, I would have to say that there are several mutations and probable hybrids involved in such a variety.

That bird has fantastic color. I guess any speck of blue would be a blue front. Myrtle looks like she is wearing a blue mask. Polarn had a Mohawk blue mark on his head. Myrtle was called a blue front but had no blue when I got her. She was a drab gray there. Myrtle now has a blue mask and blue on her neck. The surprise is that she has a blue butt and I guess that is common too.

There were quite a few pictures of Polarn that you can bring up in search. There is only on picture of Myrtle that Wolf put in a long time ago.

The one the girl is holding has no color on the wings. I've seen others with a ton of yellow and red at the bend of the wings.

It's the one the girl is holding that really made me question the species.

Cool. I didn't know they changed. My hair hasn't always been grey, so I guess it makes sense.

Most color changes that I am aware of are tied to either dietary imbalances or disease or to a smaller degree to injury. There are some normal color changes that occur as the bird matures, but these are the only ones that I am aware of.

A malnourished person has dull and thin hair. As the nutrition is increase the hair starts to fill in and become shiny. I saw this with the two girls my mother adopted. They took long and multiple showers because the stunk. That went away too with good food.
So sorry for so many stories but I have been around long enough to have a story for almost everything.

We are good with your stories, Liz, hopefully you will be around long enough to add several more stories to the ones that you already have, and we will hopefully be around to read them.

Without the personal stories, the forum would just be wikipedia.
