Green Cheek Conure Mating Behavior Question

Postby bmsweb » Tue Apr 06, 2010 5:10 am

Hi Guys, we just got a pair of Green Cheek Conures and according to their DNA tests one is a male and the other a female. The one that's supposed to be a male is doing this really strange thing. He lies down on the perch with his head low and does little pulses with his wings while chirping (to me it looks like he is waiting for the other bird to jump on??). I'm still researching all this behavior but I would have thought this is what a female would do??

Could I possibly have two females?

BTW the other bird comes close and then jumps down and starts playing with a ball that's in the cage.

Back to googling :(

Cheers
Paul

Just because you have a male and female would not mean they would mate... They simply may not like each other.. Plus their is their age which matters... Lots of factors... I am sure someone here will be able to guide you better...

Did you see this post? Is that the same sort of chirping?

Thanks for the link, yes I had seen that thread a while ago. I spent most last night joining all sorts of Forum boards to do with Conures and searching but no luck yet. I'm thinking I might give the breeder a call and see if he knows what this Behavior means.

Thanks for your help :)

Is he doing it towards you or is he trying to get the female's attention? My Amazon does something that sounds similar. He will lean forward really low and flutter his wings and try to get my attention, it's simply his way of begging to be picked up. Not sure if it could be the same thing for your little guy! Good luck with your research!

Mandy you're 100% correct in that it is a begging behavior. So all is good now. They seem to have both settled in well and they are sleeping in their breeding box, which is what they should be doing.

I've noticed that with my birds, it is the male who is on the bottom while the female climbs on top.
