Only 14 Orange bellies left!

Postby Pajarita » Sat Nov 26, 2016 12:24 pm

This is, IMPO, a too short article and I do wish it was longer and more detailed because it talks about the fact that they have identified only 14 birds left in the wild (FOURTEEN!!!!), what they have been trying to do to restore the wild population and the problems they face. I wish I could say that I am encouraged by it but with only 14 left, I don't see a happy ending to this one.

What an awful shame. Is there enough habitat to introduce more parrots?

Even more bad news... Just one single chick from the wild and the ones being bred in captivity got a a bacterial infection!

It makes my heart glad to hear stories like this one! A little girl was so moved by the plight of these parrots that she started her own fundraising campaign to help them.

That is so sad. Only 4 females left in the wild. Even the ones in captivity can't bring the bird population back fast enough.

It brings to mind the ground parrot who could not find a mate and used the top of a camera mans head. I thought they were the most endangered.

I am glad they had those to release. Long ago I heard something about the temp of the egg determining the sex.

No, the hen decides if it's going to be a boy or a girl - she also decides when she is going to lay and whether the eggs will be fertile or not. Power to the girls!

They continue to fight the species extinction every way they can! This is about a new captive breeding program they will be doing at the Adelaide zoo for them.
