Puerto Rican Parrots Conservation Project

Postby Pajarita » Wed Dec 14, 2016 4:39 pm

I had already posted about the releases into the wild of a number of Puerto Rican Parrots but this is about a release into a THIRD location which would make three separate populations of them -something that we might not think it's important, but it is because of the need for genetic diversity!

Wonderful success on this species recovery! They went from 200 parrots left in the 50's (out of more than a million merely 50 years before!) to 500 of them with nests and chicks born in the wild - and now, a third colony!

Do they do foster for the parrots that they need to produce. It would be so nice to have babies and not worry about finding a safe place for them. I could really enjoy that.

No, no fostering. As a matter of fact, no people are allowed to even visit them because they need to 'transform' the captive-bred babies into birds that can forage and survive in the wild so the less human contact they have, the better.

As you must already know, Puerto Rican Parrots were decimated with Irma and Maria, their preserve trees knocked down and the infrastructure broken up in a million pieces. Some of them did survive and now, the Fish and Wildlife is [surprisingly!] allocating $11M to rebuild so as to help with the captive breeding project. YAAAAAYYYYY!!!!
