Kakapo repopulation campaign

Postby Pajarita » Tue Jul 11, 2017 9:22 am

Two articles for you, guys. First one is about their flying four kakapos to an island in an effort to increase the population and see if they could make them breed there (and this one mentions the fact that they need a large territory with very specific plants which links to the second article). The second one (SUPER interesting!!!) is about how they now think that their natural diet is directly linked to their ability to reproduce because, apparently, the kakapos do not produce enough estrogen on their own and they need a 'mast' (VERY rich and abundant) season in native plants to supplement it. Diet is everything when it comes to birds!
