Spix's macaw

Postby Pajarita » Tue Jul 25, 2017 10:10 am

I have been following this species for many years now -the movie Rio was based on it. It's extinct in the wild and, when they started breeding them in captivity, they had to overcome HUGE difficulties: the fact that they only nest in VERY old trees -which, of course, we cannot give them in captivity- and the sad discovery that most of them had bornavirus! But they persevered and we now have a number of them born in captivity and land in the ancestral breeding grounds in Brazil was purchased and is being allowed to return to the wild on its own -it was a farm- in preparation for a release program.

This link gives you a lot of info on them all in one place.
