Spix release to the wild!!!!!

Postby Pajarita » Mon Jun 25, 2018 9:54 am

YAAAAAYYYYY - FINALLY!!! This multinational project has been going on for many years [and I have been following it since] because they did not only need to get the captive population numbers up [which was not easy because most of the Spixes had PDD plus they only use old trees to nest so they had to do artificial insemination to the few healthy ones to get 'good' babies] but also because after the Brazilian Government bought a huge farm which was located where the ancestral breeding grounds and territory of the Spixes was, they had to wait until the jungle took over the property so the habitat was adequate for release into the wild. Now, let's hope that it works and that they survive!

Spixs macaws return is overshadow by controversy - very comprehensive and complete story about the whole shebang with the spixs and the VERY iffy organization that now holds practically all the Spixs left in the world. I've been posting about this for a long time but it has been an article here and an article there, this has all the info in one place and, as you can see, the whole thing is VERY iffy: no records, no permits, too many 'rumors' of wrongdoing, etc.
