Poicephalus - Meaning

Postby lzver » Sat May 15, 2010 8:52 pm

I was researching the Brown Head Poicephalus parrot and came across an interesting fact. Did you know that Poicephalus means ' different head'? All parrots that fall within the Poicephalus family all have heads that are different colors from their bodies.

Just one of those interesting 'huh' facts.

Yup, it's pretty neat.

Also with some Pois, their scientific names actually describe how they look.

Brown-Heads are P. cryptoxanthus, which means hidden yellow which refers to the yellow under their wings.

Red-Bellies are P. rufiventris, which means red belly.

(Un)Capes are P. fuscicollis, which means brown neck (or collar).

Those are just some examples in the Poi genus. If you look at the scientific names, many times it is a description of a prominant feature of the parrot (or animal). I started a list of them awhile back. Looking up the Latin and Greek was pretty fun.

We were at a bird pet store yesterday and they had a few Brown Head babies and they were very sweet. I know I want to get one more bird within the next year and I'm looking at all possibilties right now.

I can't recall her name, but I think I met the breeder you're referring to at the local parrot club meeting this week. She breeds red bellies and showed me pictures of her baby brown heads on her camera. It's very tempting to see cute little babies ... it was hard to walk out of the store yesterday without one ;)

Exotic Wings and Pet Things in St-Clemens?

Yes, I was at Exotic Wings and Things in St. Clements and yes I was at the Golden Triangle Parrot Club meeting this week.

I'm really starting to realize that the 'parrot world' here in Canada and Ontario travels in smaller circles than I realized. Natacha, we are more than 5 hours away from each other and we're talking to the same people.

Not sure if you saw my earlier post about leg bands, but I did get in touch with the Red Belly breeder in Armprior and she said she only had one breeding Red Belly pair. So she pretty much confirmed that Lucy and Joey are siblings.

The parrot world is indeed a small one ;)

Oh so Joey and Lucy are brother and sister!
She's five, right? Hatched in 2005? Joey was bird #12 (the last number on the band) for 2005, what about Lucy?

Yes, Lucy will be 5 years old on July 1st - another reason to celebrate Canada Day :)

Besides the breeder code and 05, Lucy has the number 900 on her band.

Oh so they aren't the same clutch, but close! Lucy is Joey's little sister as he was hatched in March (3 out of my 5 birds are, the other two I don't know..).
