Senegals on Sale for $500 - PJ's Pets

Postby lzver » Sun Jun 06, 2010 4:42 pm

We were at PJ Pets in Brampton yesterday (the same store where we got Jessie) and they have a special on Senegals right now ... they normally charge $900, but they have them on sale for $500. Needless to say the ones they have in the store are all sold ... even the babies in the nursery are spoken for.

There was one sweet little guy that kept whistling and saying hello and loved his scratches. He reminded me of Jessie when I first got him.

They also had a couple African Greys, a White-Fronted Amazon and a Blue-Headed Pionus. The Pionus was making the worst high pitched noise I have ever heard and gave us a headache. Needless to say my husband said we couldn't get one of those). As much as I would love to have a larger bird, I think I'm going to stay within the Poi family - it is now down to a Meyer's or a Brown Head.

Well you know there are some baby Brownheads available near you ;)

How far is Brampton from Toronto? Might have to go there next time I'm in the area; they used to have a PJ's in Yorkdale mall but it has since moved elsewhere.

senegals are an average price of $1200 in new zealand. african greys go for about $4500. but then birds that are semi cheap in new zealand like rainbow lorikeets i think are a bit for expensive in canada and america correct me if im wrong? i paid $120 for my rainbow lorikeet.

Yes, I do know there are baby brownheads near me :) I'll most likely be seeing her at the Golden Triangle Parrot club meeting this week.

Brampton is about 20 minutes north of Mississauga. If I recall, Parrotdise Perch is on Dixie in Mississauga (I may be wrong about that). If you went straight up Dixie for about 20 minutes, you'd get to Bramalea City Centre. There is also a PJ's at Square One in Mississauga - that's where we got Lucy.

They are expensive to buy a bird there as are most pet stores ... but it is the one pet store chain that I feel treats their birds better than others and their staff seems very knowledgeable about birds. They also have a nursery with baby birds ... yesterday they had baby CAG's, Senegals, Conures and an Electus.

They have quite a good selection of toys and playstands. We were looking at several javawood playstands for about $120.

PJ's reminds me of Super Pet when they were still around. If I remember right, they even used the same type of labels and had the same type of merchandise and their birds sections were really similar.
I was sad when Super Pet got bought out by PetSmart - although it is great that the bigger parrots were no longer available to just about anyone, I still miss going to visit and spend time with the birds there.

Have either of you dealt with Leonard, of Birds R Us in Brampton?
I am getting my little Senegal from him in a few weeks but have not put a deposit on it yet. I've seen some of his babies in the past when I purchased my A&E flight cage from him for my Parrotlets and they looked to be healthy, clean and well cared for. Still, I am cautious since I have yet to see my little guy! He sells his hand fed babies for $500(he had 2 in this clutch, the other is still available and has another pair on eggs)

PJ's doesn't have any Senegals at the moment out in Pickering, just a TON of Conures.

lainmai, no I have never dealt with Birds R Us in Brampton ... I have only looked at his website.

$500 is a pretty good price from a breeder ... I've seen them for $550 or $600 from other breeders.

Let me know what you're experience is like. I plan on getting another bird later this year or next year and I'm still researching breeders.

Good luck with getting your little baby Sennie. Let us know when you get your baby and we'd love to see some pictures.

I believe that Yorkdale Mall still has a PJ's Pet Centre. I have bought two healthy lovebirds from them over the years.

Sherway Gardens seems to have a great store too. I was there about 3 weeks ago and they had a very sweet and playful Senegal on sale, I really hope he went to a loving family.

For informational purposes, I got Lucy (Red-Belly) from PJ's Pet Store at Square One in Mississauga. Got Jessie (Senegal) from PJ's Pet Store at Bramalea City Center in Brampton. I don't really have any complaints about either store. Staff that worked in bird department were quite knowledgeable about birds, were comfortable handling the birds, really seemed to know their personalities, etc. Out of any 'chain' pet store ... PJ's is the only one I would consider buying a bird from. However ... now that I know how much they mark them up, I won't buy another bird from them. I also enjoy going to PJ's because they have a greater variety of birds ... CAG's, Macaw's, Pionus, Amazon's, Cockatoo's and they always have cute little baby's in their nursery. Out of the Poicephalus family, the Senegal and Meyer's are more common in pet stores I find. Lucy is the only Red Belly I've ever seen in a chain pet store.

There are a couple PJ's Express Stores around - Milton, Markham, etc but they have a smaller selection of birds. We went to one a few months ago and saw a White-Fronted Amazon named Lola. She loved men and really took to my husband. We are almost positive she got transfered to the Brampton PJ's because when we were there a few weeks ago, there was another White-Fronted Amazon named Lola and again she went crazy for my husband.

My next bird will either be from a breeder or I am seriously considering re-homing a Meyer's at the moment.

Stopped by the PJ's in Pickering after work (it is just up the street) and they now have a cute little Sennie there. Asked the staff and it is still being weaned and is $900 (GCC are on SALE for $299 with Yellowsides at $499). I went in to buy pellets for my new Sennie and wound up buying more toys instead, another $70 I didn't really have to spend, lol! I swear this little one is going to be SO spoiled!!
