How do you pronounce Poicephalus, Psittacidae?

Postby Michael » Sat Oct 17, 2009 3:49 pm

How do you pronounce Poicephalus and Psittacidae? Kind of funny looking words, who knows how they are supposed to be said.

Basically I saw pwa-sef-alus. The second part being pronounced like syphilis but with sef and alus. Anyone have a recording of the correct pronunciation?

What about Psittacidae?? I think it's basically the same with a silent P. sit-ass-id-i (that last i sound like saying I).

Any other weird parrot pronunciations people having trouble with?

I say Psitticidae the same way you do, but I say Poicephalus like "Pie-oh-sif-AH-lus". I think everyone pronounces it differently, though. :)

Two others I've heard numerous pronounciations of are caique and pionus. For caique, I say "kie-eek" but I've also heard "cake" and "kie-ku". For pionus, I say "pie-oh-nus" and I've heard others say what sounds like a word I probably shouldn't type on here.

Oh! One more! Gouldian finch! I say "goo-li-un", and I've heard people say "golden" and "gold-ee-un" and gool-di-an". Weird, huh?

Too bad we can't put sound bits, it might be easier to distinguish difference

When I called a store to ask if they sell poicephalus, they were like huh? I asked again if they sell poicephalus parrots and she said "you mean eclectus!" I said "no, I mean poicephalus like Senegal Parrots" and then I finally got a response. Lol. I know I won't every buy anything there ever.

Yep, out of all 4 birds I mentioned in my first post, the caique is the one I know how to pronounce for sure. (the other 3 I'm not 100% sure on). I was really confused on how to pronounce it, so I asked a few breeders, all of which said "Kie-eek". But I don't think it really matters, so it's ok if you want to keep saying "cake". ;) And hey, since this is a forum, I don't think anyone here can tell how others pronounce things, so it doesn't matter anyway.

Ooh! I just thought of another one! How do you guys pronounce "severe" as in Severe Macaw? I say "sev-eer" but I've heard "sev-air" too.

I've always heard it as ka-eek. I never knew there was another way people pronounced severe macaw. And I guess the jury is still out on poicephalus.

But is Psittacidae pronounced sitasidae or sitakidae? I always said the first. Is that wrong?

No clue.
Not sure how to describe how I pronounce it, probably isn't right.
