Red capped parrot

Postby Pajarita » Mon Jan 13, 2020 10:07 am

One of the 'grass parakeets' of Australia, is also sui generis (same as quakers and the green ground parrot - I don't know of any other parrot species that is but there might be more as I don't know that many) and a BEAUTIFUL bird! I have always been intrigued by its scientific name because although the genus, Purpureicephalus, is pretty easy to figure out -they do have a red head - I can't figure out why the species itself is called 'spurius' which means false or illegitimate (?)
