Poor IRNs

Postby Pajarita » Thu Apr 30, 2020 10:03 am

First it was the quakers and now it's the IRNs! This is an article on them naturalizing in Kauai - they call them pests over and over and over and encourage farmers to provide testimonials that they eat their crops so they can pass a bill for population control - of course, the fact that this is all OUR fault and not the birds makes no difference to them and their solution is always kill kill kill ... Lord forbid they spent any time and effort in finding a non-lethal solution!

I have mixed feelings about this. I feel bad for the parrots, but Hawaii has native birds that need to be protected. If there are non-lethal options, they should be used, but i suspect nothing will be as effective as shooting them.

If I could go back to Central Park NY in 1891 and shoot all the starlings, I'd do it in a second. Maybe then I'd have seen a bluebird in my life.

Hawaii should have banned pet bird years ago. I think they banned pet snakes to protect their eco-system, but they still allowed pet birds.

States are all over the place on invasive species. We protect Mute Swans here. They're beautiful, but they're invasive. Why do we allow hunting of native ducks, but not allow hunting of invasive swans?
