Red Bellied Parrot

Postby Sevenswords » Tue Jul 06, 2010 7:50 pm

As you know I have a budgerigar named Zephyr for about 3 years, Also I kept two teils for about a year, then my step brother dcided he wanted a bird so I gave him kim and mike :cockatiel: , then I got Zephyr :budgie2: . Anyways I have space and time for something larger. I have been looking at red-bellied parrots. Does anyone have information for me? How large do they get? How much nise do they make? How much do they cost? Cage size? etc. Thanks in advance.

They are about the same size as a Senegal which is about 120 to 160 grams with 140 being average. They are fairly quiet birds, the males can be excellent talkers. My male is a great talker with a decent sized vocabulary and speaks in context. They are sexually dimorphic with the male displaying the bright orange belly. The female does not have that. They are gorgeous birds and a lot of fun. They can be very playful. Minimum cage size would be around 24 x 24 with a bar spacing of no more than 3/4 inch. Depending on your location prices will vary. In Texas you can get one for around $400 from a breeder. I really enjoy my Red Bellied Parrot. He tells me good night and sleep well every night before bed. It's very sweet.

Would a 32Lx21Wx59H with 1/2 inch spacing be fine or is this too narrow or not large enough spacing

That is one of my favorite cages. My Hahns macaw is in that cage. My Red Belly is in that cage. And my cockatiels are in that cage! Each love it!!! Plenty of room for toys, perches, extra food bowls!!

Great!! does anyone know/suggest toys, foods, and other items I need to keep these wonderful birds? I know I should study other sources but I want to hear straight from the owners themself.
