I have to say that for my girls(I have 2 tiels right now). One of them is very cuddly and the other one HATES being cuddled. Both are friendly and like to get out and flap around and perch on your shoulder and groom you... but one HATES being touched on affectionately and the other one BEGS for it...

That's EXACTLY what I have! Izzy was 8m old, and straight from the aviary when we got her. She is hand-shy, but friendly. So she'll come sit on my head. Raffi was about 3 m old and hand-raised and is very cuddly...she'll demand scritches forever...

I have Cockatiels, and a Green Cheek Conure(who's currently living at my partner's house with his Cockatiel).
When it's time for a new bird, I can't wait to get another GCC. She's fantastic, such a little character! Not nearly as talkative as the Tiels, she really only has her little chirpy noise that she makes when she's wanting attention or wants to be back on her cage, and her squeal that she does when you wake up in the morning and she's come down to the bottom so she can peak under the blanket and she sees you coming. She loves to cuddle, such a 'hair bird', gets right up at the base of your neck and pushes herself into your hair. And runs everywhere! Doesn't just wander, you put her down and she runs!

My Tiels on the other hand are much different, Mali can't get enough of attention, she turns into a pest because she just won't leave you alone! If you're trying to type, she puts her head under your hands so that she ends up getting a sort of scratch from you. Although if my dad or my partner are in the room, she won't have anything to do with me. Infact any man really. Floosy of a bird that she is!

I really like that Cheeky(and she's living up to her name!) is quite happy to just sit on your shoulder and play with your hair, doesn't need to be getting scratches or too much attention. But I do wish she would talk some more.

I absolutely adore my little tiel! He's not quite as much of a cuddlebug as some tiels out there, and I had to work with him for a couple of weeks so he would realize head scratches were good... But he's just full of so much love! I guess that tiels may not be as "wacky" as GCC's or other parrots, but I don't think there's anything more adorable then watching him forrage, get angry at toys, or run along the bottom of his cage :D

I think more than picking a species of bird that you want, you should find the bird that you want. Go out to pet stores and breeders and meet your potential new babies. Cas was the one who picked me and I wouldn't have had it any other way :cockatiel:

I have a cockatiel and have had him for 2 years, Most the time he's cuddly but a lot of cockatiels are scared of anything new so it takes time to give them new toys, dishes, perches...

An example I have is I have a rope boing hanging infront of my book shelf and It's Beakers favorite place to hang out and he'll jump back and forth between the top self and the boing, he'll run up and down it and sing his heart out for hours.

I thought cool I'm going to get him another one for beside his cage and he wouldn't go near it and if I brought him to it he hissed at it and flew away. I tried swapping the 2 boings and then he wouldn't go near the bookshelf.

lol I've had the boing for a month and finally got him to perch on it the other day, he thought cool and now he goes back and forth between the 2 and loves it.

So I guess what I'm getting at is cockatiels might hate something and then the next minute it's the best thing in the world.

I own a sun conure and a cockatiel.... there are differences, but don't let ANYONE tell you that cokatiels aren't lovable:

and that they aren't as smart:

IF YOU HAVE ALLERGIES...
Please note that aussie birds are the most dusty of them all. Don't get me wrong I have seven teils I love them to death. Yes they are cuddly, but then again all birds have individual personas. If you are going to get a tiel or an Australian bird its a good idea to invest in a hepa air filter.

Conures...

I have a sun conure; he is the biggest cuddle bug ever. All he wants is to cuddle and they get very attached to you. Green cheeks tend to be nippy as babies but thats kinda like teething. GC also tend to be the quietest of the conures, where as the sun is supposed to be the noisiest. Well, my sun is quieter than my tiels...LOL!

I do agree though...Go to a reputable avian breeder and play with some birds. You may not go with either species. Another species may end up picking you. That's what they always say the bird picks you ;)
