Is your Senegal a fussy or broad eater?

Postby Michael » Mon Aug 02, 2010 10:41 pm

In the words of a.susz, would you agree that Senegal Parrots are basically "animal garbage disposals?"

I have a fussy one. Apart from the fact that he takes everything my bf offers him and nothing I give him.
Kika gets a dried fruitmix every other day on top of his seed mix. He flings all the icky looking fruits out of it and only eats the ones he likes. I believe it is just the apple and coconut.
He doesnt eat nuts. No almonds, no chestnuts, no macademia, and NO PEANUT!

I should make it an experiment what he does ant doesnt eat.
Kika: Senegal Parrot.
Guus: Cockatiel, Yellowcheek, cinnamon, pearl, pied.

Jessie is definitely an 'animal garbage disposal' He definitely has his favorite foods, but he'll eat pretty much anything I give him. When offered something different, he doesn't hesitate and always tries it. It's funny though when he doesn't like something. He takes a bite out of it, tastes it and if he doesn't like it, he flings it around in his beak :)

Lucy is my picky eater. She has to taste everything 2 - 3 times before she'll take it from you. And if she's not interested, she pretty much turns her back on you.

Shade = pig. Seriously. There is no food that she will not touch. Quite frankly, I give a little seed to all my birds and she rarely touches it because all prospect of fresh food is more enticing and apparently so are pellets.

My Meyer's are the more finicky ones.

Pixel was a bit weary of "unknown" food when she first got here but now she's pretty open to anything.

No, PeeWee is also very finicky. He won't touch 99% of fresh foods. He seems to want whatever the humans are eating, regardless of how safe those foods are for him. In fact, as soon as he sees us going into the kitchen he starts screaming for whatever we're having. He'll eat Harrison's pellets just fine. He'll go crazy over any sort of nut. And there's the occasional sprout or dried fruit/veggie from a Goldenfeast mix I get. Other than that, finicky finicky finicky!

More than half of the fresh foods I offer Sadie don't get touched. She so far has LOVED every fruit I've given her, but the veggies are here and there. She eats pellets like the world is ending and it's her last meal, she just devours them and will NEVER refuse a pellet. The foods she doesn't like, she will pick out of her bowl and throw on the ground. She's very cautious about new foods and will often not even take them from my hand, she'll have to explore them herself (most often this results in more food on the ground).

In conclusion, I'd say Sadie is definitely not an animal garbage disposal, but not too picky that I can't get all the right nutrients in her. It took three tries to even get her to give a nutriberry the time of day, but now she loves them. Maybe she'll be a more voracious eater once she tries most of the food out there and realizes it's okay.

My Senegal can be both. Sometimes he'll just gobble down everything I put in his bowl (peas, sweet potatoes, grapes, broccoli, blueberries, etc), and other times he'll pick just about everything up out of his bowl and throw it on the floor and refuse to eat what I put in there. So for mine, it kinda depends on his mood LOL.
