Can someone tell me what species my parrots are?

Postby Imperar » Sun Aug 15, 2010 12:44 pm

Greetings, everyone. I have 2 new parrots right now that I rescued (previous owners didn't want them). I'm having trouble identifying the exact species...if someone can help me to identify I would be very grateful.

I can't quite tell what the one on the left is...but the one on the right is a lovebird.

I have no idea, but I would say it is still a young bird. Its eyes are stil grayish. Could be that his colouring is still his baby colour, which would make looking for a species even more difficult.

Natacha or pchela might know. They are pretty good at figuring these things out.
Kika: Senegal Parrot.

Hi,

It looks to me like you might have a Blue-naped Parrot. I could be wrong but it seems to fit the description and looks similar though yours appears to be a juvenile. It will probably get more color when it matures. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue-naped_Parrot I noticed that in the Phillipines they are known as Pikoy which is what you have down as the name of one of the birds. I wonder if they people who gave him to you named him that?

BTW- I noticed that in the photo there is a string or leather strap tied to the birds leg. I just wanted to warn you that anything tied to a birds leg is potentially harmful and not recommended. If they get startled which can easily happen with a prey animal, they can take off and snap their leg or worse.

Your lovebird might be a color mutation of a peach face lovebird but Natacha is much better with lovebirds than I am. She may be able to help.

Not me! I just instinctively know a parrot species when I see it.

pchela is right. The bird on the left is the blue napped parrot from the Phillippines. Very clever and great talker. There is a video on youtube of one talking alot (actually there are several videos on youtube with that species of parrot. They are sometimes called the Great billed parrot. I love them and would love to buy one but they are next to impossible to get in Canada.
You are lucky!!

Pchela and everyone, thank you so much for the information and advice. As for the naming, my mother and her partner just calls him/her Pikoy so I just followed that, not knowing much of the language (I was raised in the UK). With the string tied to its leg, it was only a temporary measure until we got it a cage (which we did). Luckily no harm was done but we will not do that again. Also I did not know this species could talk like us...is that right? I'll have to check up on youtube for this one. I keep trying to teach it to say banana, though it only vaguely says it when it's actually eating one...something like "bawawa" lol. The previous owner actually had a dog who tried to bite the poor thing...but thankfully no severe injury was made. Instead she was placed in a plastic bag when rescuing...so I think he/she had a bad start in life

For the lovebird, I originally put it with the larger parrot's cage, but Pikoy just ended up trying to always attack her, so we had to get them separate cages. In addition, I don't think my lovebird loves me, he/she keeps screaming whenever I try to give it some food.

Also I'm curious- how can you tell if they are male or female?

Some birds are sexually dimorphic but the majority of parrots have to be dna sexed in order to know for sure.

They are beautiful birds and if you are patient and gentle with them they will come to love you (even the Lovebird). They really are worth the effort. They are so intelligent and fun! Just wait until that bird starts talking to you... you'll be smitten for sure if you aren't already.

Feel free to ask any questions of us! We'd love to help you give the birds the best possible care. There are a lot of knowledgeable forum members and they're all friendly so don't be shy if you have any questions. :)
