Blue/Gold Macaws

Postby Jumpman2382 » Wed Sep 01, 2010 8:29 am

:macaw: HELLO! :macaw:

I have a dumb question ??? When are the B/G's the most noisiest during the day?

I realize they might be loud in the morning (when the sun comes up) and at night (when the sun is going down) but the people who have one BG Macaw let me know. I'm only planning on getting one macaw.

Thanks for the much needed input.

All the time

No, seriously... all the time... or really it depends on the bird and the situation. If s/he has a lot of toys to occupy him/her then s/he will be too busy to talk. Some just aren't very talkative, but some are extremely talkative. They are loud birds. I'd definitely not get one if at any point in the day I'd need it to be quiet.

It also depends a lot on the individual bird and how it's reared. I only know 2 B&Gs first hand...neither is esp. noisy...

But I know of others that were given away.

If you end up with a noisy one...and train it...it likely will be fine...but if you end up reinforcing the screaming what are you going to do? I don't think it's fair to get a bird, reinforce a potential problem, and then get rid of the bird.

Great video - I have actually seen that before.

For a cage I was going to get a KEY lock for it. The cage I was looking at at my bird fair in Nebraska at a great big dome cage that had two locks for it on the front door. One lock had to be unlocked with a key.

And yes I do understand they make a lot of noise and are very loud. But 24/7? When are they are their noisiest?

Thanks.

Depends on the bird. Hardy is noisiest when the sun rises, Norma is noisiest when the sun sets, and Rosie just randomly screams throughout the day and night. Last night at about 2am I heard her going "huh?" over and over. Apparently there was something questionable about her dreams :P

Of course mine aren't Macaws, but all birds have that one thing in common - that they are all different.

As I said earlier, they can be vocal through out the day. I worked daily with a Blue and Gold Macaw who had screaming fits through out the day. He did not scream in the morning or at night... instead he talked at those times. The really loud screaming was random. There is just no way to tell you when they will be their loudest.

There's no telling when it will be noisy. Odds are mornings/evenings but all day is game. Only at night when the cage is covered can you actually count on them being quiet. I would not suggest for anyone to buy a species that is known to be loud if noise is at all a concern. Murphys law saws that the person looking for a noisy macaw will end up with a quiet one and the person looking for a quiet macaw will get the loudest one around.

Hmmmm....Well going by my experience with a greenwing (not a blue and gold) macaw. They have a full spectrum light that goes on in the morning around 9ish and I here little talking, whistling, low squaking (this is from all 5 birds) then when me and the kids eat breakfast it starts to get real noisy. The kids bring on the noise. We have a very chaotic house and the bird feeds off of it. The kids are always screaming and jumping around. So we could be eating breakfast sometimes and not get a single word in because of my macaw! The kids usually hold their ears when they walk past his cage to go to the bathroom. When I leave for work or the kids go to school its usually the quietest all day. When I sneak home they are all just hanging out and being good, then.....THE CHILDREN COME HOME, THE HUSBAND COMES HOME.... chaos begins around 4:00 I mean loud, screaming, squaking, whatever you call it, its loud! I can hear them a few houses away at the bus stop thats how loud he is!! Its usually like this until they go to bed or my kids are quiet which is until around 8:00. From then I feed them and they are talking quietly and that about it for the loud noises until the next morning. They all go to bed kinda late which will be changing soon. I turn off lights around 11:00 but will be cutting back until 9:00pm. I hope you have a lot of room and a lot of friendly neighbors!!! Our neighbors have always been very good with our pets.

As far as noise, the only time my Blue and Gold screams is when she sees "intruders" out her window or when the dogs bark. Otherwise, she regularly sings at about 3 in the afternoon, which I find very endearing as sh cannot carry a tune to save her life but fancies herself an opera singer! It is SOOOO funny!

Blessings,
