Question about Meyer's Parrots.

Postby Azure Hanyo » Fri Sep 24, 2010 11:13 pm

For background on this, here is the reference link. :) viewtopic.php?f=7&t=3356

I am *hopefully* going to be taking in a foster Meyer's parrot tomorrow evening. There is only so much one can learn about a parrot species online and in books (I ALWAYS do my homework, burhurhur) so can you Meyer's owners offer me your personal take on the species? I know each individual is different... I just want to get a more broad idea of the parrots than just what I've read so far.

Your input is very much appreciated.

On a side-note... The owner and I have been conversing via e-mail and she mentioned how she has trouble climbing with one foot and her beak sometimes, but gets around well enough to manage. I asked if her wings were clipped. "Of course" was the reply. Um...you clipped the wings of a handicapped bird?!!!! Then she goes on to say that the bird is very timid and shy. Um, she probably is dependent on you and she HAS to be scared. Do I have a point or have I become an anti-clipping nazi???? Please tell me I'm not... I really am not...I can understand why some people clip but in this case it seems downright cruel. (I didn't tell the owner that, I dropped the subject. I just want to help the bird find a good home!!!)

Anti-clipping Nazi!!! no, really clipping her wings is kinda mean imo. I clip, but for my own reasons, if any of my fids had that kind of disability I wouldn't clip, how else can she move around? I also would've looked into getting it fixed while she was still young and easy to heal from potential surgery. Luckily she isn't just dumping the bird, but found a suitable (even if temporary) home. I'm sure that you're going to bring out the best in her (not to mention the sassiness, just ask Gal ;) )

Aw thanks for the support! :D (Bahahaha yeah...sassy is definitely the name of the game in our household!!!)

So you really think her foot can be fixed?!!!!! I will look into that, definitely! I will post pics of her foot for everyone to see, when she lets me handle her more (if not right away).

And clipping is FINE for some, but yeah... Not in this case. The poor baby!

it depends, and it can be very costly. I know that my vet has been able to surgically fix splayed legs in young birds and sometimes in older birds. I know of one vet in the bay area that broke then completely rotated a king pigeon's pelvis to fix his splayed leg, awesome, but ow!

My foster meyers (who is being left to me in a will) is the sweetest bird you'll ever meet. She has never bit anybody in her 13 years of life! She will go to anybody and just wants to be cuddled all of the time. She also has a bad leg (her mother disfigured her in the nest) and she plucks out her tail feathers but she gets around fine. They adapt really well to disabilities.

During Truman's injury his wings were a great help. Not only for getting around at will, but even for basic maneuvers such as stepping up and turning around on his perch. He'd flap to take the weight off his injured leg. So yeah, clipping a leg injured bird is pure cruelty.

Poor bird! All the more for the defense for your foster care to become permanent. The baby will be so happy to be loved and cared for and feel safe and secure with you as its new mom.
