what species...

Postby Giantmoa » Sun Oct 03, 2010 4:49 pm

-has a noise level that is about the same as or quieter than a gcc (or has less high-pitched shrieks...?)
-is more independant than a gcc
-does not have the tendancy to be a "one-person" bird
-is playful/entertaining/full of personality etc :P
-more of a mid-sized parrot, but smaller birds are great too ^_^
-chews (I know this sounds silly but I've always wanted a bird that could demolish those thick wooden toys I see  it just seems like it would be so satisfying...) not really necassary at all but something to consider
-would possibly get along with a gcc? I know there would be a big chance they wouldn't get along but it would make me oh so happy if they did...

**if** I can get another bird, it would ideally have most of these traits. Any ideas on what species would fit this? Noise level is probably the biggest deciding factor because my dad can't deal with the peircing shrieks :?

Scotty fits most of those requirements, but Scooter is the bigger chewer in the family. He drools, though! And since he's 5 times Scooter's size, we're unlikely to let them interact much.

a cape? I can imagine my parents expressions if I came home with one... I'm surprised that scooter chews more though! rainbow chews less than my tiel ever did and and when she does chew she sticks to the easy stuff like balsa wood and twigs... oh well, maybe some dormant Amazon-like desire to chew will awaken within her when I least expect it

I think your best bet would be another GCC or a variation like a Pineapple or Turquoise or a Rosifrons etc. That's the best chance you'd have for them to get along. As for chewing, that seems to be an individual thing rather than a species thing as does playfulness, and one person birdedness.

I definitely would not mind another gcc
but do you think a dusky-headed conure or a peach-fronted conure would possibly get along with a gcc? I don't know what their noise-level/calls sound like though...

Dusky Conures are awesome and pretty small so you might have a good chance of them getting along. They are also fairly quiet and generally playful. I don't know about peach fronted conures having never met one.

I don't have much conure experience, but if you're looking at the different species don't consider a Gold Capped. Pele's shrieks are deafening! Great bird, but not good if your dad doesn't tolerate the high pitched calls.

Definately not a Princess Parrot. Prince is the most noisiest bird ever. And he doesn't whistle a different range of whistles, he picks the one same noise and screams it as loud as possible. Get's a bit much having him sit on the couch with you, while doing a King Parrot call to compete with the TV.
You'd probably have more luck getting another Brazilian bird to get along with it, when we tried to mix our Aussie parrots with our GCC, they'd chase her and try to gang up on her(which she responded by just walking away and every now and then pulling a face at them  ), but our birds had the same response with a Musk Lorry we had in the house. They just don't seem to mix, unlike with Tiel's who seem to adopt any other bird as their friend, whether the other bird likes it or not

I think the Pionus is a great bird. Myself I lOVE the look of the Bronze wing. I think A.suz has one????
My understanding is that they are great birds, quiet and fairly easy to please and are okay on their own a bit....

I've been vaguely wondering about pionus... I don't know much about them (yet) since they don't seem to be that common in the pet community? leastwise not as common as say a tiel or a gcc...

and you'll have to tell me how loud your hahns is :hatching:
