We have been keeping and breeding budgies and tiels for years now, and we are thinking of branching out to parrots. We have been thinking about this for a long time now and there are cetrain things we need to keep in mind when making decisions.
As much as I love Kika, there are a lot of Senegal breeders already. I have been keeping my eye out for them and I have seen the prices drop by half in the past year. This indicates overbreeding, breeders have to drop their prices to get rid of their birds. Same thing with african greys and the smaller cockatoos. So those species are out of the question. I dont want to add to an already overpopulated pettrade.
To make a long story even longer. We went to a parrotcenter the other day and we came across a very pretty bird that we hadn't seen before. After a little research we found out it was a Jardines.
Jardines aren't very common in Holland, but not very expensive either. It seems to me they would make great pets.
I know some of you own Jardines, so I would like to know something more specifics before making up my mind.
How loud are Jardines?
Do they tend to be one person birds or everybody's friend?
How easy are they in the day to day handling? Are they like Greys or like Senegals?
How trainable are they? Are they talkers?
Are they cudly birds or do they just prefer to be talked to?
How messy are they? Do they spread a lot of dander and/or food?
Are they active birds. Do they prefer to fly or climb?
And last but most importantly. How is their overall character?
Is there a difference between male and females?
