Senegal parrot and other species

Postby Sparkles » Sun Oct 17, 2010 11:51 am

Hello! I'm new to this forum... I have a question about senegal parrots and way how do they get along with other species. I have an indian ringneck and I'm thinking of getting another bird...I'm thinking of poiceophalus or Pionus...I've contacted a breeder here in Croatia( Europe) and he'll probably have a white capped pionus baby in spring and maybe a mayer's as well. And another breeder will have senegal parrots in spring...I've done my homework on this species but one thing that I like more about poicephalus in general is their playfulness as aposed to pionus reputation of beeing a perch potato. But I read that senegals don't do well with other species of birds...is that true?

Senegal Parrots are aggressive one-person birds. They get very defensive of their territory and attack other birds (and people) that infringe upon it. With good training, the aggression towards people can be mainly curbed but the parrot to parrot aggression, I don't know. I doubt it because you cannot make the other parrot create a reinforcing situation for the first one. I don't suggest mixing any species that are smaller than a Senegal Parrot together with them as their aggression far outweighs their size. I have enough trouble with my Senegal bullying my Cape Parrot.

Of course you could get a Senegal Parrot and only let one bird out at a time ever, but to have both out at once, there is a good chance that will be a problem. I'm not saying it's impossible but you must be 100% ready to keep the birds completely separate because they do not get along.

See I find this to be a very broad generalization or maybe I did something right with Shade??
'Cause she's the least aggressive of my birds and even wants to preen my lovebird - there is no aggression there.

She's also not an aggressive one-person bird - while she wasn't the biggest fan of my boyfriend, she wouldn't attack him, if she wanted nothing to do with him she would just go away further from him. She's also been very good around kids and other strangers.

I've always been weary of such generalization because I know quite a few Senegals who have not turned that way - what made the difference? I do believe it was a good amount of socialization early on with other people and birds.

However, I agree that it might be possible that if someone gets a second bird, it might not get along with the first one - but that can happen with any species. You want to know who the biggest bullies in my home are? The Meyer's. While I do let all my birds out at the same time, I'm fully aware I have to do so while keeping an eye on all of them.
