Cameroon African Grey

Postby Rueae » Sun Nov 28, 2010 5:32 pm

So I've been looking into CAGs (along with two other birds) and have come across quite a few breeders selling Cameroon African Greys.
From what I've read the only difference between a Congo and Cameroon is size and color, the latter of which is lighter and larger.
I was wondering what else anyone on the forum would know about them and if anyone knows exactly how big they are?

I just did a quick google search. It seems that the Cameroon African Grey is just a subspecies of the Congo African Grey.

The Cameroon Grey is actually a myth. Anybody selling one as a "special" African Grey is either misinformed or lying. People tend to call larger, silvery colored Greys Cameroons but it's just the individual bird. There were so many birds caught in the Congo and then smuggled to Cameroon where they were exported as Cameroon Greys when in fact they were from the Congo etc, etc. There is nothing wrong with buying one but don't let a breeder charge you extra money because it's a "Cameroon".

The only types of African Greys are Congos and Timnehs.

Hm...so it just so happens lighter color comes with larger size in the species? That's interesting, if true. I don't even know that I've seen much of a difference anyway, I've only seen a picture of one Cameroon and it was just a baby. I assume they're a bit lighter then, regardless?
Do you know the adult weight of a "Cameroon"? The baby I saw, was weaned but just so and I am told was 400g.
Even if they are just big Congos I'd like to see/know better the differences. :3

So, any further information would be great.

Some of the larger Greys can be about 600 grams, maybe a bit more. 400 is on the small side for a Grey. A smaller Grey can also be a lighter silver color so it's just the combination of large size and light color that is considered a Cameroon.

Here is an article concerning the issue. http://parrotsonline.homestead.com/jeanpattison.html
