We wouldn't really want a Grey, would we?

Postby entrancedbymyGCC » Sat Dec 11, 2010 7:04 pm

Between my weird dream and the bird at the bird store today, it seems like something that could happen! This particular store is basically run by breeders and has a lot of java trees with birds out on the floor, and occasionally one hops off and goes walkabout. Today it was a young :gray: and Bill picked it up to put back on its tree with the rest of its clutch mates, only it didn't want to go... so he finally got it to go back on the stand, but next time he passed within a foot of the tree, it hopped onto him! So he handed it to me, and then I put it back down, next thing I know, it's hopped back onto me! We are pretty sure this is a VERY young clutch, the one we saw still being hand fed last time we were in there, about 3 weeks ago. We did manage to leave without her (but not before finding out it was a her). Whew! Close one!

I'm not really serious, we don't really have time for a third, but... are Greys that affectionate, or is this an unusual example? She was really awfully sweet. I've never been that attracted to Greys, but I think my mind is beginning to change. But they are quite difficult to keep happy, aren't they? High strung, need to be kept busy... right?

We don't want one, right?

Maybe it was hungry and wanted to be hand fed. They do associate humans with hand feeding and may have thought any human would do.

It wasn't making obvious food-soliciting gestures.... but I'll wager it wasn't US in particular, it just seemed really curious about and interested in hanging around with people.

I wish I could help here entranced. I'm very drawn to Grey's but for some of the reasons you mentioned, I won't get a Grey. My poi's get their time out and social time, but are also pretty independent.

If I ever get a lottery and could be home all day, then getting a Grey would be number one on my list. I'm fascinated by their beauty and their intelligence.

I adopted my :gray: when she was two years. i wouldnt consider her high strung , but not nearly as laid back or affectionate as my jardine was.shes shy around new poeple but has been getting better. Slurpie is very good at keeping herself busy as long as i rotate her toys every few days so she doesnt get bored. Sometimes i come home and i hear her upstairs contently talking to an empty room. it doesnt seem to hard to keep her happy =P

Not terribly unusual behavior, especially for a young Grey. They can be more outgoing than the adults. That said, a Grey who will go to anybody is unusual and a Grey like that starts out as a very social baby. Grey are awesome Entranced... come to the Grey side...

They really are cool. Other birds, you feel like you're living with smart animals. A Grey? You might feel like you're being observed by an ET or the parrots have sent out a scientist to study humans in their natural environment.
