Poicephalus question

Postby Boman » Fri Dec 17, 2010 9:27 pm

Hey all!

Im new to the forums and have been wanting a parrot for quite some time now. I have been living in Peru with my wifes family for 4 months and they have a young amazon parrot that is a ton of fun...I will be moving back to Canada soon and have been doing lots of research as to what bird would best suite us. Since we will be living in an apartment, an amazon would definitely not work out lol (noise level). So I've decided on the poicephalus!

We work 8 hour days...so the ability to keep itself entertained through toys etc is a must

a playful/loving companion

The quieter the better (apartment)

Talking/mimic ability is a plus

Which poi best suites these traits?

Thanks a bunch :)

Boman

Also I've seen pics of the ruppells parrot and love the colors! Its a shame that this species is so rare at the moment... Does anyone know of any breeders in Canada that have these? The only one that I know of is someone in california, but he cant export... :(

Hey Boman, there's some POI girls around here somewhere, i think they like" pois better than boys" you should hear from them, they know all about them, several are from canada also and might be able to help with avaibility, Do you own property in the US ? You might can get a permit to carry a pet bird into canada. The CITIES permits are a real pain in the fanny but not so bad for one pet bird if you are a resident of the country of origin.Good Luck and welcome to the forum.

One of the POI girls checking in .... and I do like 'pois better than boys' Richard :D

Poi's sound like a good choice given what you say. We work all day and with lots to keep them busy in their cage, my three do well.

As you can see by my signature, I have a female Red Belly named Lucy. She was our first bird, she's 5 1/2 years old now and she's a funny little character. She's our best talker. She's not a cuddly bird though .... she loves her scratches from mommy, but prefers to hang out and do her own thing.

Jessie, is a male 4 1/2 year old Senegal and he's my goofy monkey. He says some words, is very goofy and playful and lives for cuddle time with his mommy.

Kylie is a 2 1/2 year old female Meyers parrot that I adopted in October. She's such a little sweetheart and is such an easy going happy little girl. She hasn't spoken yet, but that's alright. She does the cuttest little beeps and squeeks and defintely has her own little way of communicating.

Jessie is the loudest, followed by Lucy and then Kylie. There is another forum member Natacha who has 5 poi's (2 Red Belly's, 2 Meyer's and a Senegal) and she lives in an apartment and has never had any complaints.

Lucy, Jessie and Kylie are amazing birds and they bring me so much joy. With proper socialization, training and love they make great pets and companions. Good luck with your search.

Thanks for the firsthand info! It's nice to her from others that own these birds rather than just reading the facts. keep em coming!

I see that you're from BC. I don't know the name of the aviary off hand, but I know my Kylie came from a breeder in Vancouver. The girl I adopted her from had her flown from Vancouver to Toronto. If you're interested I have Kylie's papers and could post the name of the aviary.

I'm sure there are other breeders in the area too.

Erhm....I think I remembered Cory saying she got it from the lady who runs "Healthy Bird" (she used to breed parrots, including Meyer's, but has recently stopped) and she is located on the other coast..East coast that is, I think somewhere in New Brunswick ;)

Geesh ... what kind of birdie mom am I? Natacha knows more about my Kylie than I do. :?

She came from an aviary called Tiny Rascals Aviary in New Brunswick.

Sorry Bo, as it turns out I'm not much help with finding a poi breeder for you on the west coast.
