Hehe..don't take it wrong, I know a lot about a lot of Pois in Canada, or so it seems ;)
In any case, I remember reading Jo's blog (Healthy Bird / Tiny Rascals) and I think Cory had sent her a letter which was figured on the blog..and I have this crazy memory, just ask Bram ;)

Now, to come back to the question at hand, yes it seems that a Poicephalus might be an ideal bird for you.

As Izver pointed out, I live in an apartment as well and have 5 Poicephalus (and a Lovebird) and have never had a noise complaint. While they are able to be noisy, when put in comparison with other species of parrots, they are on the quieter side.

They are all playful in their own way, but I have to say the Red-bellied, specially my male, are more playful with people (whereas the others like to play on their own). Red-bellied parrots are also big show off birds - even Izver's Lucy, whatever she might say, when I came over to see her birds back in November Lucy was definitively the one who was being more social with us ;)

As for breeders...well there used to a be a good one in my area but she stopped breeding. However, there in one in the Guelph area who I believe is willing to ship her babies. Earlier this year I was contemplating getting a baby Red-bellied from her, but it turned out her clutch was only composed of males and I wanted a female. Had Pixel not been put on my path, I would still be waiting for one of her babies - I went to visit her home and was quite impressed with how her bird pairs were kept and what she fed them.

She breeds Brown heads and Red-bellied parrots in the Poicephalus family, and also has Dusky, Blue headed and Bronze-wing Pionus, which might also be a good fit for you. (Ironically, I believe quite a few of her breeder pairs come from the Vancouver area..)

Our (Un)Cape fits the bill, although as an older bird with some baggage, Scotty can be a handful, and I can't say if a baby would suitable for a beginner. But he's relatively quiet, appears to have the potential to be an very accomplished talker, is quite playful and can be very sweet and cuddly as well. They are still fairly rare and therefore fairly expensive, though.

Yes, I agree with you Natacha. We had friends over on Friday night and Lucy was showing off, laughing with us and even let the woman give her scratches. So out of my three, Lucy is the most social.

I also meant to mention that I know the woman that runs Soltia Aviary ... she lives a couple minutes from my house. However, I have never been over to her house, but I'm always impressed when I speak with her.

No harm done. If I had gotten Kylie from the breeder that would have been a different story.

I think you're on a mission to find all poi's in Canada ... especially Red Belly's. I wouldn't be too surprised if you eventually find another sibling to Joey, Pixel and Lucy ;)

Oh I think I might have found more - or at least more owners, since I haven't seen the birds in person.

One lady at my parrot club has an older Red-bellied hen who might have had for parents the same as our three (but might have been from another breeder, the one who initially sold her pair to the breeder who had Joey, Pixel and Lucy).

And I'm quite positive that this little guy is another sibling.. :)

And it's entirely possible that the female RB I was offered shortly after I got Pixel might have been another one...but she also might have been from another RB pair that first breeder had..

That picture of the red belly is so cute, if I were ever to get a poi, I'd want one.

It sounds like that a RB might be the right choice for my wife and i! Playful, even when company is around. Now I hear that they have the rep for being the most likely to nip, but I'm sure with a proper upbringing and training that stereotype can always be proved false.

What are the main differences between the male and female RBs? Aside from looks?

As babies, they are prone to panic attacks - if this happens, it's just best to let them finish their attack, wait for them to calm down and then pick them up. Otherwise, they might associate you with the bad thing that had them start it in the first place.

I don't know if they are prone to nip more than any other Poi - quite frankly, I have Meyer's parrots that could compete with my RBs. When I first got my male RB (Joey), he did have a tendency to nip me more but was perfectly fine with my boyfriend - in his previous home, the man was his owner and I believe the guy's wife at the time did not like Joey and resented him. I think he might have picked up on that. Now, he's much much MUCh better with me where nipping is concerned.

I find both the male and the female are playful, chatty and show offs :)
