GCC vs Lovebird?

Postby GlassOnion » Sun Jan 02, 2011 4:36 pm

Hey everyone, I've been seriously considering to add another bird to my cockatiel. I take good care of him and he has his own HQ flight cage, so I feel like I could use another feathered companion.

I've been seriously considering the GCC for the past few months, but recently the idea of a lovebird came up..

I'm looking for a cuddly bird, in particular. Could anyone who's had both give me an insight on this?
Also, who is considered smarter under the same given circumstances and equal amounts of training?
As in.. who's more cognitive?

Thanks a bunch! I want to make the right decision!

I haven't had a lovebird, but I really enjoy my :gcc:. While he is no Alex, Scooter is fairly smart, and even though green-cheeks aren't particularly known for speech, he uses a few phrases regularly and with definite intent. He learns readily, sometimes to my detriment, but so far I've found him to be more interested in "goofing around" than learning disciplined tricks. He's smart, but he's not "intellectual" compared to our :cape:. He is also quite cuddly when in a quiet mood. He likes to lie in my hand and get head rubs. However, he's also high energy and can be quite a rambunctious play-machine. He's really kind of perfect for a smaller bird, I think. But I may be biased.

I've never had a lovebird but my gcc is a cuddlebug and picks up simple tricks amazingly fast. She's also fiesty and stubborn but always very very cute (especially after a bath!) :gcc:

I would strongly recommend the green cheeked conure over the lovebird.

I have run across a couple of sweet lovebirds, but they do tend to bite, and they will bite other birds. They are usually very cage defensive, and woe to the cockatiel who decides to perch on a lovebird's cage.
