Budgies & Cocatiel together

Postby Margaret » Tue Mar 01, 2011 2:08 am

By together I didn't mean in one cage of course, but in one household.
I have read a little bit, but I really would like to know your opinion how they will go along together.

This is just a thought, but it's worth to ask, because:
- my life-partner constantly reminds me about his smart Cockatiel he had ages ago- not that he thinks that something is wrong with budgies, he takes care of them too(he has 2 budgies in his home)
- both species are close to each other
- budgies are so busy with each other, that they can hardly find time for me, except I have to buy that time with millet ;)
I live in apartment, so noise level is an important for my neighbors. Can 1 Cockatiel be louder than 4 budgies?
How they share time? I'm afraid, because my budgies are allowed 24/7 to be out. This is not an sudden thought and by asking I don't mean I bring bird tomorrow ;) so I could have time to change things.
And my last worry: can 4 budgies pick on 1 tiel- I have read how the small birds can be fearless.

- They can certainly be in one household - I find the budgies will boss the shier cockatiels more than anything, but I've known many to be great buddies as well.

- 4 budgies might bother a cockatiel, but it all depends on their personalities - you would have to observe and go from there. As the budgies were there first, you may want to ensure the cockatiel has a safe place in its cage at first to avoid issues from developing. Over time they can be incorporated together. But, they may also get along right off the bat without any issues - it could go either way.

- Noise level, really depends on the particular bird. I'm sure one cockatiel could be louder than 4 budgies put together, but we've not had any problems with our cockatiel being overly loud except at dawn & dusk, and only for a few minutes at a time. I have had our trio (African Grey, Cockatiel, and Caique) in an apartment before with no complaints, and did have a breeding pair of cockatiels as well in an apartment with no noise complaints - they can be SHRILL when in birdie "heat."

- I can't comment on their 24/7 out of cage concern - ours are caged unless we are at home for safety reasons.

I think it's safe to say that 4 budgies are louder than one cockatiel. I know that my two budgies are louder than my cockatiel. I find that budgies never shut it, and when there's multiples, they just try to make as big of a noise as possible.

Usually when there is problems between budgies and cockatiels, it is the budgies who cause the problems. However, it is common for cockatiels and budgies to co-exist peacefully.

When I first brought home Einstein, I already had two budgies. After quarantine, I let them be able to see each other, but never be out at the same time, for about a month.

Eventually, I let them out at the same time. At first, they avoided each other. Then out of curiosity, the budgies began approaching. We did go through a few months where Bonnie, the female, became territorial around my cockatiel. However, that has passed.

Bonnie has actually become really curious about Einstein, and a lot of the time I'll catch her trying to preen him (which he doesn't really like).

I feel comfortable with all my birds being out at the same time. They go into each others cages, eat each others food, share their toys, and seek comfort in each other.

So, if you do plan on adding a cockatiel, keep a watchful eye on any female budgies. They are more aggressive and territorial.

In terms of noise, cockatiels can scream that I would consider pretty loud but not bad. It is a high pitched call that I can hear from one storey up. Budgies are quieter in volume but chatter a lot more.
But then my tiel whistles for hours a day, which is louder than budgie chatter from my experience.

Thanks people,
I'll think about Cockatiel, but first things first- I have to put more work and be more consequent to my budgies. And then we'll see :)

And there is another budgie to re-home on local Craig list. I should have forbidden access to that site, how many budgies you can bring home
