I think that could happen to any bird really. I've heard stories where budgies soon die after a mate out of loneliness. But I have to think that maybe the bird really didn't die of loneliness but more from whatever killed the first bird.
My step dad had a lovebird for many years, and she was always kept as a single bird. She lived a very happy life.
I know a woman who had owned lovebirds in the past. She had one pair for a number of years, then one of them died. After a while she added a new lovebird in the cage, and the first lovebird moved on.
I think a lot of people have misconceptions about lovebirds. They don't always need to be in a pair. Just like any other parrot. However, they do need a companion, which comes of the form of us owners.
