How comfortable are your birds with each other?

Postby zazanomore » Sun Mar 06, 2011 2:03 pm

My birds show no aggression towards each other. They aren't territorial around each other and they will share anything.

As time goes by, they just get more and more comfortable with each other.

They go into each others cages, and use each others things. Sometimes in the afternoon around nap time, or around bed time, they will actually all go into one cage, and fall asleep with each other.

I guess we just have a really strong flock mentality.

Is this normal though? For all you other multiple bird owners, do your birds have strong relationships with each other?

Right now, I only have two parakeets, so I'm sure my experience is a bit different and I'll have to reanswer after I (hopefully) get my new bebe.

But... my birds are okay with eachother. They like to be near eachother and they like to sleep together. However, Pigpen can get a bit aggressive toward No Name sometimes. I notice she beats him up if she's in a particularly foul mood. For instance, she's molting right now and seems to be a bit grumpy. She's thrown No Name out of the cage (literally!) multiple times today. But she'll go to hell and back to make sure he comes back to cuddle with her.

No Name on the other hand.. he's a lover. He will cuddle with and preen Pigpen until cows fly and watermelons rain down from the heavens. I'm pretty sure he's molting, especially since his cere is changing from its baby purple color to the normal male blue color, but he seems to be perfectly fine being with her.

I think Pigpen got my moods. ;)

She seems almost excessively moody. One second, she's preening him and trying to feed him. The next, she's chasing him out of the cage and sitting on the front door squawking at him! It's hilarious, but I feel bad for him.

Aww.. that actually sounds cute. But then I couldn't say the same thing if 2 macaws were doing that.

That's the good point! All the males go along with each other except the female one: Blueberry. Even Mango is a boss, he don't pick up on another birds- opposite: he seems to constantly take care of one bird.
Blueberry was the sweetest one until she mature, the same was with Lemonade- female I had before.

I think about future Cockatiel, and I know already the bird is gonna be male

We can have Rosco (Caique) out with Merlin (Grey), but they don't interact with each other even if they're on the same stand.

Stryder (cockatiel) can sit with Merlin, and Stryder actually goes up to Merlin, scaring Merlin away :D.

Merlin's the good neutral bird who is trusted with others.

Rosco...not so much (he's attacked another bird previously...) - he will never be out with Stryder as he would harm Stryder - he walks outside Stryder's cage, clucks, and makes his crazy eyes at Stryder - Stryder knows to stay on the inside away from the bars during this crazy Rosco time.

So two out of three out together at the same time isn't so bad, considering all three have different personalities.

It actually is really cute, lol. But I feel bad for him because his face almost screams "why can't you just love me!??!"

Currently our tame birds are: Xavier - male indian ringneck, Ducky - male sun conure, Bubbles - female parrotlet, Sam - male tiel, and then whatever babies I have handfeeding. Ducky and Sam are roommates, Xavier and Bubbles each have their own cage.

I really didn't think I could mix all of these out together all at once since the IRNs and parrotlets aren't known for playing well with others. But I can have all of them out at one time on the same playstand. No one picks on anyone else. Except Bubbles the parrotlet. She doesn't actively go after anyone, but if anyone gets too close she's very aggressive. If she wants to eat, she'll chase everyone away from the food bowl. Basically, everyone else has figured out to give her a wide birth. They move when they see her coming. So long as no one's actually getting hurt, I leave them all alone.

I think this works for me because I have two homemade playstands pushed together side by side so it ends up being a play area that's apprx. 4 ft long, 2 ft wide and everyone had plenty of space to get away from anyone they don't want to be near. Kinda like a playground big enough to stay away from any bullies.
