Cockatiels and parakeets are flockers. They love to be together. I have three pair in a huge parrot cage. In the spring only one pair will produce young even though the others lay eggs. As soon as the babies take their first steps out of the nest - they belong to the flock. All three pair feed them and take care of them.

My Eclectus and Cockatiel sit on the same perch when they are both oh of the cage but that's about it. They never really pay attention to eachother. Only when my cockatiel is in an annoyed mood will he put on a threat display thinking he can win in a fight with a green giant almost two times the size of him, (he thinks hes a macaw!!) only once did I ever see both birds stand completely nextto eachother and come in contact with eachothers feathers. They are both pretty independent so they don't mind if they don't interact with eachother.

My cockatiels will add any to the flock. When I put my daughters pair in with mine to save cage cleaning and feeding they were accepted immediatly.
The Love Birds are in a different cage but when I seperate cages they all complain.
My Amazons (Rambo & Myrtle) made first contact today. I put his play patteo back up in the sunroom where she is. She said "hello" He said "hello" and that went on for a while. He finally asked her "you got a problem?"

We've never let Scotty and Scooter physically interact. The closest we've come is to pose both of them on the same stand or person for a photo, but very closely supervised with no physical contact. The size differential is just too great to feel it would be safe. And I suspect they are mutually jealous to boot.
