I don't teach my Green Cheek Conure tricks. I love to watch him play naturally, and I think it's much more amusing to see what he comes up with on his own rather than have him mimic a bunch of movements. He routinely swings from the knot on his rope swing. He'll hang upside down in the corner of his cage and rub his back on the bars. He'll do somersaults around the perches of his cage. Last night, he even followed me from the room his cage is in to the kitchen and then to the bathroom for a shower.

I'd thought about allowing my budgies to breed, but I don't think I will be doing that any time soon. Breeding is something only the most experienced of owners should do and there are far too many variables and things that can go wrong if you don't know what you're doing. I don't want to risk the health of my budgies to have babies, and I'm perfectly happy with how they behave now.

I'm personally against breeding of small, 'popular' birds as the market is already over saturated with them. Maybe half of the people who ever buy budgies actually provide them a good life, and they live so long too- 8-15 years. I don't see a point in adding to the flooded market that feeds uneducated, irresponsible, impulse purchasers in such large numbers.

You'll need a special fortified diet for the birds. The seeds you have now just won't cut it and the birds could have some problems. Breeding is a lot of work. If the birds are too young, they may not properly care for the chicks. That means you'll need to step in and do hand feedings every two hours for the first week or two. And just because it's 1 in the morning and you're tired? Too bad, the chicks still need to eat. The food has to be a certain temperature or you can seriously injure the chick.

Really, a lot can go wrong with breeding birds. I suggest you don't do it.

Research would be great, but I would suggest you not even try breeding birds until you have a couple years of bird ownership.

They're just being affectionate towards each other. I've had my budgies for a year, and I always see them kissing and preening each other. They've never bred, probably because I've never offered them a nest box.
