Dream Flock.. Revisions?

Postby kaylayuh » Fri Apr 01, 2011 6:04 am

There was an old thread about your dream bird and/or dream flock. The thread was about a year old, so I'm wondering..

Have you added your dream bird to your current flock?
Has your dream bird changed?
What revisions would you make to your Dream Flock List?
If you got your dream bird, has it lived up to everything you thought it would be?

For me, my dream bird was a Moluccan Cockatoo and a Toucan. I haven't gotten either, and I would still love to add them to my flock one day; but, my dream bird list has grown quite a bit since becoming a member on this forum. My current list would include both the Toucan and the Moluccan Cockatoo, but it would also include a Jardine, Indian Ring Neck, Cockatiel, Military Macaw, Quaker, Parrotlet and Lovebird.

I had a Sun Conure on my list, but I've realized that my little GCC fulfilled Sun Conure envy. While I still want one, it's not anywhere near as high on my list as the others are.

I'm sure in time, my dream flock will change as I aquire certain birds. It also helps that I've recently gotten my boyfriend into parrots.

I have to say, though, I would rather rescue the birds than buy them. The only birds I probably wouldn't rescue are the Lovebird, Parrotlet, Cockatiel or Indian Ring Neck.. and only because they are much harder to find in a rescue than they are at a breeder. But if I could find them, I'd love to have them.

Have you added your dream bird to your current flock?
I'd say that all my birds are my dream birds.

Has your dream bird changed?
Before, my number one dream bird was a Congo African Grey. I still would love to have one, but I guess now I'd say I really want a Galah. I've seen plenty of videos of them, and they are so bubbly and adorable. I don't think I'll get one anytime soon, but I think once I have my own home and family, I'd like to add one.

What revisions would you make to your Dream Flock List?
I guess I'd love to add more australian keets to it. They are so beautiful. They have charming little personalities, and come in such a variety of beautiful colours.

If you got your dream bird, has it lived up to everything you thought it would be?

I guess I should say that my three little feather dusters are dream birds, but I would love to have a larger flock.

I really, really want a room solely for my birds in a future home. I can just see the walls lined with huge cages, toys hanging from the ceilings, and large bird trees in the middle of the floor.

I love animals.

I'm planning on becoming a therapist, and I'd love to have programs involved with animals. I'd love to own a hobby farm, with therapy dogs, horses, cats, and even parrots.

That's a great goal. I got my birds to help treat/control Bipolar Disorder and it works surprisingly well.

Have you added your dream bird to your current flock?
As of right now, my 2 birds are my perfect birds. Due to my strenuous school schedule (I've been having 15-17 hour days every day for a few weeks, and 2 more weeks to go..), I need independence and companionship with each other from my birds. I'm happy with coming home and as soon as I open the cage, both are out and about all excited.

Has your dream bird changed?
Constantly changes as I revise my needs and learn more about various species.

What revisions would you make to your Dream Flock List?
1. Either a Lory/ Red belly/ Caique (I want a playful compact bird that I can wrestle with.)
2. Ekkie (I want a beautiful, yet intellectual bird who is both playful but can be serene.)
3. Aracari (I've always been fascinated with these guys, and I hear they are cuddly and fantastic with a low noise level and the inability to chomp down hard.)
4. Female Cape (Their descriptions sound so ideal coming from both articles and owners.)

If you got your dream bird, has it lived up to everything you thought it would be?
My current birds are great; I can't speak for the future additions as one can never be certain whether (s)he's made a right choice unless a plunge is taken.

I forgot about the Eclectus. I think they're so beautiful.

The Fiery Billed Aracari has to be my favorite. The coloration of their beak is just so neat. But the Curl-crested Aracari just makes me fall in love.

I think the structure of the Aracari (and all Toucans in general) beak makes them incapable of biting down hard on anything. Seems great if you go through wooden blocks like paper.. like I do with my birds.

You're in luck, our rescue has all but the ringneck, though we did have one about a year ago. If you live in eastern PA you're even in better luck because we are in the process of procuring a property in Delaware Gap, right on the PA/NJ border and you are more than welcome to come and play with the ones we have. We did have a Toucan, Ginsu, but she died last month from complications from a surgery on her foot. She was so sweet to hold. Their feathers are more like fur and she would purr when we cuddled her. I miss her so much.

One of my dream birds is a toucanet, they are brilliant, adorable birds and perfect if you don't have a lot of room. BUt we have all kinds of lories, finches, conures....you name it. We just adopted the only Jardine we had this week, so... sorry. We have three Moluccans, beuatiful sweet birds but VERY loud (Coco is our sweetest and if you believe this, her last owner kept her in a closed shed in his backyard because he couldn't stand the noise!) We have tons of cockatoos of all species and of course dozens of macaws. Seriously, one thing I suggest to anyone with a wish list but no room, volunteer at a rescue, you can play with all the dream birds you want for as long as you want and they truly appreciate the socialization.

Oh dear lord, lady. The temptation is very, very great and if I could afford another bird right now, I'd be so there. I'm about an hour north of the Delaware Water Gap.

My parents had a Moluccan cockatoo when I was a child that they kept locked up in a dark room with chains and padlocks on his cage. It's heartbreaking to think about. They couldn't stand the noise and shouldn't have ever been able to raise anything, but I've always loved them.

Being that we are moving hundreds of miles from our current location, we WILL be needing new volunteers (hint hint). Bryan and I are actually moving with the rescue and they are leasing us the guest cottage on the property, so we will be there all the time (when we're not at work at our regular jobs). We will seriously need new volunteers and you will learn so much (and get to play with your dream birds without having to take them home! Its like borrowing children from relatives!!)

One of the things that we currently do and will do again is open up volunteering to vet tech students for training. many of our local vets send their trainees to us to learn about bird maintenance and give them the chance to handle anything from a Hyacinth to a finch. there are times we get in birds that I've never seen before and probably never will again (someone dropped off a partridge a few months ago, boy that one is a trip! We named him Rumba because he loves to wander around rooms and bump into walls, LOL)
