I was looking on Kijiji, and someone was selling their rose crowned conure, a somewhat rare species of conure, which just happens to be one of my dream birds, and she labeled it as a cherry headed conure.

How do you buy a bird, without even knowing the correct name?

I wonder if they could have been mislabeled at a pet store?

There's a little conure at one of our local shops that's labelled as a Maroon Bellied Conure, but I'm pretty sure it's actually a Yellow-sided GCC. I'm pretty sure maroon bellies look exactly like normal GCCs, but with green tail feathers instead of maroon, am I right? This one has a bright yellow belly with a splash of maroon (so I can see where they could have went wrong) with paler green on its head, back and wings, and maroon tail feathers. :|

Maroon Bellys have Maroon on the underside of the tail and green on top, while GCC's have Maroon on both sides of the tail. Also, I think the neck is a little more yellow on the Maroon Belly and more grey on a GCC (but it's been a while since I saw a GCC close up, so not sure about the neck). If the tail feathers are maroon, then it is some variety of GCC.

As far as I can remember, the tops of its tail feathers were maroon. I'll take another look though. Thanks! :)

I'm going to be the lone dissenter here (but then, I prefer my cocktails in martini glasses). I don't know that it is critical to know the exact English common name for a bird that you are trying to rehome. For one thing, there are sometimes variations in the terminology. For another, the person may actually not be a native English speaker. For a third, memory fades over time... It may be of some significance to know you have a small conure of the Pyrrhura genus, but it's not really all that important if it's green-cheeked or maroon-bellied since they are very similar birds in all but the details of appearance. I can imagine an owner taking good care of a bird for several years but not becoming so educated as to know the difference between a Sun Conure and a Jenday Conure and having forgotten which was what. And what if the bird was inherited from a parent?

I'd be more forgiving of the person if the species looked a lot alike. I have a hard time telling a green cheek from a maroon bellied. Suns and Jendays confuse me, too. When species look super similar, I can understand that. But trying to sell a green cheek conure as a Sun conure? That would irk me.

Oh God that sounds like me lol. I have a Sunday Conure and I couldn't tell if it was Sun Conure or a Jenday Conure. In my defense, I was told 2 different things from the pet store I bought him from. I'm still not sure what species he is, I'll just have to study him as he gets older or save up some money and go bird specialist.

Save your money. If it is a sun/jenday hybrid, unless it's obvious, no one's going to be able to tell you more definitively.
