Kakapo (Strigops habroptilus)

Postby birdvet » Sun Apr 17, 2011 1:32 am

I haven't perused this forum in ages, been super busy with the new job and now I'm hand raising a kakapo chick that I have in hospital because she's unwell - 16 hour days, 7 days a week to care for this kid...high maintenance little chickie!!! I thought this would be a great opportunity to get a kakapo discussion thread up and running :D. I'll post some photos of her soon, in the mean time, peruse this link to read a bit about her as well as check out the kakapo recovery team webpage.

It's such a priviledge to be involved with these birds...AMAZING doesn't even begin to describe them

That's such a cute baby. Best of luck I hope she grows up strong and makes more little big parrots. Great work you are doing!

Good news! Solstice 1 is doing great and I'm flying her back home next week. Also get to do a check up on another 6 chicks that they're handrearing...what a tough job!!! I have heaps of photos of the little cutie, will post some soon. In the meantime here are some other links for you to peruse. Oh, and Sirocco is AWESOME!!! He is also VERY horny...always!!!

(the above were poseted on Sirocco's facebook site...a visitor to the zoo caught some of the action)

Right, better go and feed the little critter, I'm sure she's hungry :-)
