NEW BIRD

Postby brian73 » Wed Apr 20, 2011 5:13 am

hello everyone

my daughter is moving into her own house in a few weeks and taking our kakariki polly with her..
which leaves us with our african grey Rocky who does not want to interact with me at all as he only has eyes for my wife......

so this bring me to the decision that i am going to get a new bird, one that will actually bond with me so i would think a hen would be best....
now the big question what type of bird to get????????
i dont want a loud bird but i do want a good talker and one that wants to be stroked and that will enjoy being handled.......
i had a hahns mccaw 2 years ago called george, what a laugh he was hahaha great talker in fact he was always shoutin at me lol " hey brian ya wanna fight" and if i ignored him he would start calling me brenda and start laughing.... but again he was not a bird that liked to be stroked and handled much although he tolerated us at best
so any suggestions would help a lot

I'm not too sure about talkers, as I don't have any myself, but my GCC is quite cuddly and loves scritches. They can talk, but not too clearly.

Indian Ring Necks are great talkers, though I've heard that they can be semi-aggressive if not hand raised/hand tamed. Again, I don't have one, so I'm not sure about that. They sure are beautiful though.

No on the Indian ringnecks - they don't like a lot of petting and cuddling AT ALL.

How old was your hahns? I've heard they're snuggly and like petting. Maybe get a baby that's handraised and well socialized?

Yeah, I thought I read that somewhere but couldn't find the source. They're such great talkers, though, and completely gorgeous.

I love the IRNs. They are so low maintenance/not needy, but still want to be with you and talk to you and make cute noises at you. But I guess I like them because I also have the clingy super needy conures that wants lotsa petting and cuddling. So I get my fill of both personalities.

I think that's why I'm falling in love with my anti-social budgies all the more now. They're so not needy and not clingy compared to the GCC. It balances nicely.

I was telling my boyfriend about the albino IRN you have. I keep pestering him about it, lol. He wants to wait to get a forth bird until we make the move cross-country, and he'll be coming out here for a couple of months sometime in May/June. Neither of us think it's really fair to get another bird here and have to move it again back across country. I'm already worried how we're going to drive with these three now. Good thing I don't have a lot of things to move and they're the most important.

Brian -

So sorry we hijacked your thread.

I was asking on your other thread if you were getting another kak. They're cute, but not snuggly and wanting petting either. They're pretty ADHD.

How about a small cockatoo? Talks, snuggly, tricks. Sorta quiet, for a cockatoo. Decibel-wise, about the same as a grey. You'll just have to see if you can stand the raspiness of the scream and be careful not to turn it into a constant screamer.

Kaylayuh - I'm starting new thread about traveling cross country.

I just googled some small parrots, so I could give you a better answer instead of hijacking your thread. :)

A couple of people on this forum have Pionus parrots. I've been eyeing them for a future bird and they seem ideal. They are relatively quiet, have the ability to talk, can be cuddly but can also be independant.

There's also the Red Bellied Parrot. They're often described as quiet, affectionate and funny. They're a member of the poicephalus family, so they're related to Senegals and Meyer's, which could also be good choices. I have heard the Senegals are bullies, however.

My personal favorite birds are Cockatoos. They have the ability to talk, but they often become a one person bird. Cockatoos are also incredibly loud, but if you can deal with the noise, you may not mind. They're often described as velcro birds.

hi again

a cockatoo is a no no. way to loud i think lol as for our grey he never screams at all, in fact when im about he never does anything, if i leave the room and its just him and my wife off he goes into full conversation with her..
i keep looking at the senegal's, i know they dont really talk but they seem so full of fun and look as though they would spend hours and hours just wanting to play with you..... also they are cheap to buy over here around £300 would get me 1 about 1 year old although i run the risk of it not bonding with me again. £250-£350 would get me a baby with no cage
personally i always like the thought of giving a sub adult a new home as i hate the thoughts of birds jumping from home to home and never getting to really settle down

I would suggest a pois. Look into some others besides the Senegal as many are notorious for being one person birds and bring bullies. The red bellies are the best talkers in that family.

This is an excellent article on the pois, read through it!
